This is a question regularly asked about whatever country people are travelling to: what type of plug is used? Unfortunately it seems that there is often no simple answer to this question! Generally in continential Europe the plugs are the two round pin variety - but in some countries the pins are a little bigger and your continential adaptor might not work! In America the plugs are the two slot variety and these slots are angled for Australia. In South Africa, a three pin plug is used, with the top pin being larger than the other two. In India, a smaller version of the SA plug is in general use, although hotels had European two pin sockets as well. There are exceptions to these rules and I think it would be very helpful if people who had been on various tours - South America, Thailand and Vietnam, China etc could post on this thread to let others know what type of adaptor to bring!

Cheers,

Bob

To add to what Bob says a few years back I bought a universal adapter from Boots which can be adjusted for both European round pin types as well as the Australian and the American sockets.

Think this covers 95% of the world but as Bob states there are a few exceptions.

Could'nt help but giggle at this thread....

For me I have one adaptor it's called a universal adaptor, and has bits that you can slot out or push back in!!!,to cover most countries I have been to Europe, USA, OZ, NZ. so instead of taking loads, I just take the one and it covers them all. I have never come unstuck yet.

Now all I need now is to find a universal charger that does the Mobile, the camera battery, the I POD, I Shuffle etc then my bag will weigh less.

Hi Cindy, does it have pins and flat slots or how does it work? I can't imagine it would work in South Africa or India or similar places which have the three round pins unless it is a true marvel! Where did you get it? I'd be interested in seeing what it looks like! I have the Boots one that you slot in one part for Europe (north), add a second part for Europe (south) and a third adaptable flat slot type for US and Oz but it is very large and awkward!

Best wishes,

Bob

PS glad I gave you a giggle!!

Bob,

I actually got it as a free b in a bag off goodies for testing out Terminal 5, which was fun?!!. Why don't you have a look online at univeral plugs or in the shops I think Boots the Chemist have a travel section, or even perhaps the big supermarkets the universal one is widely available. I am sure this is something you would be able to pick up or check out at the airport. I bought a travel iron at the airport on my way to a JY Austrian tour..

Thanks Cindy, I'll look into it! By the way, I know you're waiting excitedly for the new JY brochure but I'm just curious, if there was anywhere in the world you would like to go with JY (that they don't currently offer), where would that be?

Cheers,

Bob

I am a very LUCKY GIRL!!! I have been on my dream tours.. Australia Ayers Rock was stunning. Nashville and Memphis lived up to all my dreams, and I have learnt so much about my other favs Martin Luther King and the American Civil War, among some other USA tours.

I would say I have a huge interest in animals, I loved the Kenya Safari tour so if I am not learning about history I think another animal one would tick a box for me, more elephants and say the big 5.

I have just spent a fantastic day this week at Highgate Cemetery another box ticket of my bucket list!!! that was very interesting so maybe I shall start a Grave Yard tour thread up..saying that a War tour of say France and to visit the war graves would interest me.

If it was a shorter flight I would be back to Oz at the drop of a hat. I left a piece of my heart there. I am really looking forward to seeing what new tours there are in this new brochure, so I can sort something out for 2014, I love having something to look forward to and research about.

When's your next tour Bob. Have you done your dream destination?

On the subject of travel adapters

1. I buy adapters from ebay, usually from UK sellers. There is a very wide range at prices very much cheaper than the shops or airports. Ebay is particularly useful for India adapters which are our old 5amp which I have never seen in the shops, even local Indian owned shops.

2. I always take at least two adapters. Most people nowadays take a few pieces of electrical equipment and it is useful to be able to use or recharge more than one at a time. It also means you can lend one to fellow travellers.

3. I take at least one with a built in USB charger so that I can charge my phones with just a USB lead. I choose one where I can use the USB socket and the adapter at the same time.

4. I take some things, such as my camera charger with a continental plug fitted instead of our UK 13 amp. I can still plug this into my universal charger, the plug itself is much smaller and it will fit directly into some hotel sockets and shaver plugs.

5. I take pieces of card to put in the slot by the door where the key goes so that I can charge things up when I am out of my room in the evening.

6. http://www.kropla.com/electric2.htm is useful for checking individual countries.

To get back on topic(!) in Chile, the plugs had three round pins in a straight line but thankfully southern European two pin adaptor worked there. In Argentina, the sockets had three straight slanted slots so the US/Aus adaptor worked there, with the flat slots slanted Oz style and in Brazil the small two pin European adaptor worked again. Wonder what the sockets will be like on my next tour (Vietnam and Cambodia?)

Cheers,

Bob

PS I do not have an unhealthy fascination with plugs or sockets, I just worry I won't be able to charge my phone, camera etc!!

Hi,

As I am about to embark on my 9th JY holiday (Thailand) and reading these various threads over the last few months, I have bought an Skross World Travel Adaptor Evo USB which has 2 USB slots, and claims to cover 150 countries! Not cheap, but cheaper on Amazon. Being Swiss, it has been compared to the Swiss Army Knife, and is meant to be all singing and dancing! Will report back when I've used it. Will also be taking it to Vietnam next Feb., Bob!

Hils, thanks for the information. I will have to investigate. I have got one adaptor from Boots, but not sure if it will cover any countries apart from Europe and America. I am going to Israel in two weeks' time and not sure what type of adaptor will work there. I will take my Boots one and if it does not work, guess will just have to buy one there.
