Just returned from a wonderful river cruise and experienced amazing sights and sounds of Russia.

I didn't really know what to expect as there are very few reviews regarding Russia so thought I would leave a contribution.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. We had a very good group and I'm sure there will be emails toing and froing in the future.

The MS Repin is a 40+ year old river cruiser and has been refurbished,  the cabins were on the small side but sufficient and I found mine comfortable. The walls are quite thin so noise is obvious at the beginning but once people realise most do become more considerate.

St Petersburgh is beautiful so much to see, it's hard to choose where to go during free time. My choice was The church of The spilled blood, sad history but so beautiful. Outside was a street artist with pastel chalk drawings of several locations in St Petersburg,  so hard to resist and reasonably priced considering the work that had gone into them.

The Hermitage was huge and so full of history also St Catherines so ornate. The optional excursions are well worth doing if its your first trip to Russia.

The destinations along the route were lovely, plenty to do and see (and buy).  I really enjoyed Mondrogi , this stop had a very well stocked vodka museum where your entrance fee gets you several tastes of the vodkas or is redeemable against a bottle to buy. One of the ladies really enjoyed the samples and was very jolly for the rest of the day (Elizabeth) it all added to the fun :)

There are so many crafts to see, I particularly liked the art work done by local Russian artists and brought a beautiful watercolour of a ballerina. There is also wooden crafts and open houses to go inside, Mr Putin's summer house and the biggest slippersock which is in the Guinness book of records. We had our tasty shishka picnic in a large wooden pavilion accompanied by the ship's entertainments team adding to the experience. It would have been nice to have had a little longer here.

Kizhi had wooden churches transported there and is an open or museum, the church of transfiguration 22 onion domes is unreal.

Goritsy has the Monastery at which we were given a mini concert and chance to buy a cd, which is superb also beautiful traditional houses.

Yaroslavl has wonderful churches and markets, this small town was very attractive,  I found all places were very clean, no litter.

Uglich is a lovely little town, lots of traders to sell their wares, you can see them painting and making things to sell. Street musicians and singers add to the ambience.

Finally on to Moscow .....Just wow, superb. The Kremlin,  St Basils , so much to see. I was fortunate enough to go to the Bolshoi ballet on the Saturday evening . Highly recommended, expensive but to good a chance to miss.

The food on board got better as the cruise progressed, it was nice to try the local cuisine although some of the combinations were a little strange. The breakfast catered for all tastes.

The crew were all very nice, very presentable and approachable - they were quite happy to correct the mispronounciations of the Russian language which helps following our lessons by our tour manager Lidia. She is a lovely lady, so very kind and supportive also a very good teacher of the Russian language.

The guests were invited to singing lessons, yes, singing the national song Kalinka and another song Moscow nights to perform at a concert at the end of the cruise. Several took part and quite happy to perform. Painting dolls, dancing, daily competition were also part of the experience.

Well I hope you don't get bored reading all this but as you can see it was a wonderful trip. A good insight to Russia which I recommend and I'm sure I will return.

Thank you Christine for a great review. Russia was not on my immediate list but after reading your review it is going to join my everending list.

Thank you for this review, Christine.   I've done 3 river cruises with JY and friends who have already been to St Petersburg (with another company) have been saying for ages that I really ought to go but I was very doubtful.   Your review has convinced me, however, and I can only hope that JY do this cruise again in 2020 as my 2019 holidays are already set in stone.

What are the chances of this holiday being in the 2020 schedules, Vickie?

Hi Christine!

Thank you SO much for this review!  I've been looking at this tour (with various different companies) for several years and really want to do it!  Realistically it won't be for several years, so I really hope JY don't drop it!!

I enjoyed reading your review so much and it has only made me more determined to do the cruise when I can fit it in - I figure, why just do Moscow and St P if you can see a host of other towns and sights as well?!  I am so glad that JY reconfigured this tour, to give more time to the two main cities, to ensure that customers see the very best of the whole region.  I like to plan ahead but it could be 2023 before I get to do it, so JY if you value my custom don't you dare drop this tour!!!

All the best,

Bob

Hi Ann,

Apologies for the delay, I have asked our Holidays team. At the moment it's not showing as on offer for 2020 but I will confirm this.

Many thanks,

Vickie

Hi Vickie,

That's disappointing to hear.  Perhaps it may be brought back in a couple of years time, as I know JY have offered it and dropped it before?  I would certainly prefer the river cruise to the War and Peace itinerary.

Best wishes,

Bob

Hi Bob and all,

Good news! The team has said they are looking at dates for 2020, but we just don't have anything confirmed yet.

Thanks,

Vickie

Many thanks, Vickie.   I do hope the team manages to put this holiday into the 2020 brochure.   I would very much like to do it but if it is deferred until future years only I don't think I would be up for it.   I agree with Bob, a river cruise would be a much better way to see the country than a land-based on with fewer places to see.

Thanks Christine for the review. Really helpful as Moscow & St Petersburg are places I want to visit in the near future.

Thanks for the review. I'm thinking of doing it in June 2020 but wasn't sure how much time there'd be either side of the cruise. Did you find there was a lot of time spent getting from the berth to city sights in St Petersberg and Moscow?

Hi Christine

I'm planning a trip to Russia & would love to go to the Bolshoi ballet. Just wondered how easy it is to get a ticket & did you book it before you travelled?

Hi Jackie

You book on line, the process is easy. I booked whilst on the cruise in Russia but you could book before you go, just go on the Bolshoi website.

It was a wonderful experience and thoroughly enjoyable.

The programme in St Petersberg was pretty full and the organised tours covered the major places of interest so nobody on the cruise felt they needed to venture off.

In Moscow several people were confident using the metro and went on various solo outings. Myself and a couple of companions actually got the metro back to the berth from the Bolshoi theatre, it was quite late at night but we felt safe and had no problems. The tour manager will help you regarding times, some went out in the morning and returned before dinner in the evening. You are issued with a card in Russian and English giving all the ship details so can't really go wrong getting back.

Hope this helps

Thank you for all this information, Christine. It will come in very useful as I have now booked my holiday for May 2020! Having kept an eye on the river cruises section of the web brochure for some weeks, this one popped up yesterday evening and I jumped at it. At the moment the brochure only shows the cruise from Moscow to St Petersburg in May, which I have booked, but I was told by Customer Services that there will be others later going the way you did, St Petersburg to Moscow. I am really looking forward to it, just need to forego a new carpet for a few months longer than planned!
