Hi all,

I was just chatting with one of my colleagues who has been looking into something a little bit different. Would a 5 day break somewhere like the Yorkshire moors/dales with a focus on walking be interesting to you? We don't do a huge amount of UK breaks during the year at the moment so we wondered if it might be something you are interested in?

look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Will

Hi Will

Just some thoughts on JY doing walking holidays ;-

1. There are a fair few walking holiday specialists already in the market, Even just looking at what I think are the two main players (Ramblers & HF), they provide a big range of UK locations/dates. I’m sure that you would want to look at their prices, accommodation levels, meals provided etc before making any decision.

2. I believe neither Ramblers or HF provide many (if any) single only holidays

3. A lot of walkers belong to a local group, and often go on holiday with their group.

4. In my experience around half of the people on walking holidays I’ve been on are “single”. Will people switch companies?

5. What level/grade/daily distance walked would you pitch the holiday at?

6. Would you offer more than one walk each day – a lot of HF holidays have a big group, and offer several walks at different grades each day.

7. Would the holiday be totally walking dominated, or would it be a mix of sightseeing/walking ?

8. British weather ! (My own personal view, is that I would be reluctant to spend large amounts of money on a UK walking holiday because of the weather, and the high cost of UK holidays, compared with many locations abroad which are much cheaper, and have better weather). The UK weather also raises the question of if you would run the holiday other than say the middle 2 months of summer, which must be the most expensive in terms of hotel prices.

Hope that helps.

Hello Will

I would certainly be interested in a walking holiday in the UK - as long as the price is competative !!! It's strange - I don't object to paying vast amounts of money on foreign holidays but not on UK holidays !!! There are many operators out there with very competative prices therfore JY must be capable of matching:them. Hope they do !!!

Might be something I would consider. Would want a 4* hotel to go back to after a day's walking. Yorkshire or Scotland would be of interest, although I'm sure there are other places. Price would also matter as, as mentioned above, its often cheaper to go overseas. Haven't booked holidays so far this year, expect to book two short holidays and one long haul - am looking between the JY Vietnam trip and the US Canyons LBH options.

Hello

I do love walking, but not sure if I am or will be fit enough for strenuous walking holidays! I have hardly seen anything of the UK so would be interested in a holiday where walks are at a gentle or mid pace and the trip includes some local sightseeing. I have done a lot of walking in Austria during my younger days without any problems. Once we walked from Schlegeis (not sure if I have spelt it right), up the mountains, all the way to the Italian border and back!

Regards

Hi Will

Just You used to do many walking holidays to various countries, And only have the one left to which I know of, Walking In The Ahr Valley ( Germany ). This is a good little trip, And is ideal for new walkers, and ideal as a location for sight seeing & touring etc, And you dont really need to be a seasoned walker. But I feel perhaps additonal dates could be arranged, And perhaps this holiday expanded upon. For perhaps the more season walker also. As got Walking in the UK to which I do a great deal of. As someone has previopusly stated the cost would be probably excessive, and of course our weather is so unpredicatable. And Imwould much prefer a walk abroad.

Hi all,

I love walking breaks in the UK (although a weekend is personally better for me logistically). However Stuart makes a lot of very good points. In my experience, specialist walking holiday companies have a range of "ability" levels in their offerings, from very gentle rambles to mountain walking. How would JY address this? Also, as Stuart says, quite a number of people on these hols are already "singles". There is an excellent company that organises walks for women; probably not on Stuart's radar!

Personally I don't know if I would switch unless it was a great location and a suitable date (not offered by any other company).

However, I am interested in the Ahr Valley walk, particularly as transport is now by rail I believe. The Red Wine Trail caught my eye - I'm quite partial to German Red Wine but the Germans never export any!
