Hi Will
Just some thoughts on JY doing walking holidays ;-
1. There are a fair few walking holiday specialists already in the market, Even just looking at what I think are the two main players (Ramblers & HF), they provide a big range of UK locations/dates. I’m sure that you would want to look at their prices, accommodation levels, meals provided etc before making any decision.
2. I believe neither Ramblers or HF provide many (if any) single only holidays
3. A lot of walkers belong to a local group, and often go on holiday with their group.
4. In my experience around half of the people on walking holidays I’ve been on are “single”. Will people switch companies?
5. What level/grade/daily distance walked would you pitch the holiday at?
6. Would you offer more than one walk each day – a lot of HF holidays have a big group, and offer several walks at different grades each day.
7. Would the holiday be totally walking dominated, or would it be a mix of sightseeing/walking ?
8. British weather ! (My own personal view, is that I would be reluctant to spend large amounts of money on a UK walking holiday because of the weather, and the high cost of UK holidays, compared with many locations abroad which are much cheaper, and have better weather). The UK weather also raises the question of if you would run the holiday other than say the middle 2 months of summer, which must be the most expensive in terms of hotel prices.
Hope that helps.
Stuart
