I am on the brink of booking Calabria but as I live down in west cornwall the trip to the airport for a very early start is proving difficult, has any one done this journey and do you have any ideas as best to tackle it.I need to be there for 4am ugh!

Hi Marion,

I have never done this trip or flown from Stansted - but I am flying from Gatwick in a couple of weeks time and I also have to be there at some ungodly hour. What I have done is book myself a cheap hotel (Premier Inn in my case at £40.00) which is near the airport - this means I can get up at a less ridiculous time that morning and I only have a very short distance to travel. Maybe it is worth seeing if you can also travel down the night before.

It will at the very least lessen the worry of being late.

Hello marion,

I am booked on this holiday for the 12th of May, and will be staying at the Premier Inn.

sorry I can't help you as far as your journey is concerned as I live in opposite direction,

but maybe someone will see your post and can give you some guidance.

Dave.

Hi

Your best plan would probably be to travel to Stansted the day before and stay at a hotel. Premier Inn have one at the airport.  Don't know about any others though.

I went to Calabria some time ago when the flight was Gatwick to Naples, and would love to go back. It was fabulous.   However, with the move to Stansted and a budget airline there is no way I am going to do it again.

I have flown from Stansted many times, it's  my local airport.  The airport is very easy to negotiate  and there is good duty free shopping, and plenty of places to grab a drink and something to eat. If you fly easyjet, the cabin  service is very good. Much better than that I recently  experienced on BA.  In view of the distance involved,  travelling  up the day before makes sense.  It would awful to miss your flight due to holdups on the roads.

The only time I used Stansted was for a very early flight to Naples.  I can only say that the Premier Inn there is excellent.

I live down in the west country. I have looked at holidays from Stansted but for us it is difficult to get to. You would have to go up the night before. As far as I have been able to discover, the train route is only via London. Most trains from our direction go into Paddington and you would need to change stations from there. The same would apply if you tried Nat Express coaches. Good luck 🙂

Marion,

If you do decide to book this holiday and travel by train, you arrive at Paddington then

it's 8 stops on the Tube Paddington to Liverpool St station and the train to Stansted.

Also I have traveled with Ryanair and never had a problem.

Hi Marion

I have never flown from Stansted but, I have travelled Great Western Penzance to Liverpool St. via Paddington several times, and it's all very straight forward.  The east bound Hammersmith & City or Circle line takes around 20 minutes from Paddington through to Liverpool St. where you would pick up the Stansted Express, it would be just a case of changing from train to tube to train without having to go out of your way.  Your train ticket will cover the underground.

Like others have said, travelling up the day before and booking into the Premier Inn at Stansted (other hotels are available) would be your best bet.  The flight back, if it remains the same, should land at 13.05 so would give you time to get to Paddington for your journey home the same day.

An overnight stay is an added expense on top of the holiday, either going out or coming back, but for those who don't live near to an airport there's no other choice.  I hope you manage to work something out and get your holiday to Calabria.

Hello there,

I live not too far from Bath.

I went on the Kusadasi inclusive tour from Stansted and travelled across the day before; I would suggest that you do the same as it says it takes 10hrs from Penzance. Just went on the site. I bought a single on the National Express coach because the return date didn't marry up with the National Express times. I got a taxi on return. I changed at Heathrow. It was really quite simple. I think the coach to Stansted picked up at the same drop off point. Just ask if you are unsure. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express which was excellent. I also arranged to meet fellow travellers at the Hotel via this forum so that we got to know each other beforehand. This worked quite well. It is a long journey even from Trowbridge. I wish you luck. Kind regards. Melanie.

Thank you all for your help and info, I have now booked Cilento Spa escape for the 19th June from Gatwick, it was a huge step as I have never been away on my own before and it took me a week to pick up the phone. Is anyone else going on that date, I should love to hear from you. Kind Regards Marion

Hi Marion

Not everyone who travels with Just You use the forum so you may not hear from anyone. You have picked a lovely trip for your first Just You experience. I have not yet done this trip, but it seems to be very popular and I would like to do this one day. At the moment I am concentrating on doing the long haul trips. You will not be on your own as there will be other like minded people on the trip. Have a great holiday.
