Hi all

Looking for a christmas break overseas, can anyone confirm the average age for these trips? Don't want to offend anyone, but I went with a company (not this one) a few years ago and everyone was 60+ (no it wasn't SAGA either), had a great time however had nothing in common with this age group. Sorry again if this sounds harsh, hoping 'Just You' has a range of ages for each trip.

Hi max545.

The usual age range for the trips I have done has been late 50's through to early 80's with the occasional younger traveller. If you are interested in the trip then you already have something in common as the rest of the group are, I would assume, also interested in the arae and the itinerary. Age is a number and I have met 80 year olds with more get up and go than some 30 year olds and they have some great stories to tell.

Hi max545

What age group were you looking for? I have been looking at the China trip, I am in my late 40's... I think you can meet some really interesting people at any age 🙂

Hi Max

I totally agree with Jonah. I personally get on well with people of all ages so never have a problem travelling with Just You. Like Jonah, I too have met older people who know how to have more fun than their younger fellow travellers. I love meeting people and hearing about their experiences - one can learn a lot.

On last trip I was youngest but the next wAs only 10 years older. Think was same in my first jy trip. If going on same trip surely will have plenty in common with you 're fellow travelers.

Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed my time, I might have been unlucky on this occasion as the group I was with just wanted to drink tea all day and not go out and explore, finally retiring for bed at 2000 hrs. I'm very active (mid 40's so not a spring chicken myself) enjoy getting out and about.

Hi Max,

While agreeing with the comments from others, I can understand that sometimes younger folk want to holiday with a broadly similar age-group. There is a singles travel company called "Solos" who organise travellers into different age-groups and while I didn't find them quite as good as JY, if the age thing is important you might like to give them a try.

Best of luck,

Marie

In my america canada trip we had a small drinking group which was from all ages. Think it's just the people not the ages and what they are in to.

I think the replies on here already say it all, and this is a question that gets asked many times, I started using JY in 2006 and I am now 56. As other have said age is a number, I might be younger than some but I have been out walked by 80 year olds, for me part of the enjoyment of a tour is the age range and life experiences people have had some people are older but BOY have they lived..

I would point out I go for the full on touring days, long haul tours with multi hotels, if I have been in the go all day, and then had to find somewhere to eat, no offence to anybody I want to go to bed so I am fully charged for the next day!....I will socialise all day but I do want a quiet hour before lights out.

Hi. I went on the classic cities of Italy tour last year and while some did go to bed early there was usually about 6 of us still up at midnight. You didn't say which holiday you went on but I suspect you'd be better booking yourself on a touring holiday where all of the travellers want to explore.

good luck with whatever trip you decide on.

Well said Cindy.I'm not going to divulge my age but I can give you a decade or so. I'm lucky to have travelled around world, and had some wonderful experiences. I've done everything from backpacking and camping to luxury cruising, and a lot in between. I was widowed five years ago, and started singles holidays soon after. I'm still very fit and independent, and there are still places I would like to see, and many I would like to revisit. Although I still take independent trips in Europe, going long haul with a group gives my family peace of mind when I am on the other side of the world. I would say that fitness, an open mind and tolerance of fellow travellers are important travel accessories! Age is just a number.

Hi Max,

I agree with the other comments that have been made - I'm also mid 40s and have been travelling with JY since 2010. On the 11 tours I've done there have always been a number of folks who like to stay up later than the rest and have a few drinks so I think you were unlucky. There are also usually a few more adventurous folks who like to head off independently during whatever free time might be available. I'd definitely recommend the touring holidays where you see a lot of a country and by their nature, they tend to attract more active folks than the explore holidays which are based in the one resort.

Cheers,

Bob

Hi Max,

Whilst I don't have an issue with the age range on the holidays I have been on so far, I totally understand where your coming from. If you know what holiday you would like to go on and want to know the age range - go to the "ask the editor" section, you can ask Monty to give you the age range of any holiday and she will do her best to give you the information.

I believe based on statements from JY themselves they cater generally for the older traveller but that seems to be changing, and from what I see more and more "young people" are travelling with them also.

Good Luck

I find this very puzzling: presumably this was a "stay put" holiday somewhere? I can well imagine that this might attract sedentary types - of all ages.

I tend to travel independently in Europe and use a group for long-haul tours in Asia: in my experience it is physically impossible to get to bed by 20:00 if one has been travelling or sightseeing all day! Such tours tend to attract interesting people with enquiring natures who are good travelling companions throughout the day, and of whom some like to sit in a bar until late while others like to go out after dinner and explore (Asia after dark can be very interesting) - and some do both! But age was never a factor.

On an actiive holiday, there can of course be good reasons for retiring early on at least some nights: the effects of jet-lag, long days travelling and sightseeng, and the need for unnaturally (for me;-) early rising on some days can all take their toll. And don't forget that some people - of all ages - are naturally awake very early so go to bed earlier: they may take a dim view of those of us who usually stayed up late, but they were always too polite to say so.

As regards age, I went on a tour round China last year with a "solos" holiday company (not with JY) and met a very interesting man who told me that, being nearly 75, the only thing which would stop him travelling would be the rising cost of travel insurance: he had recently spent two weeks touring independently in India, and had managed to extend his China tour (ending in Shanghai) with a private add-on to Hong Kong. He was also the only person in our group who regularly went swimming in the hotel pool before breakfast - and he didn't go to bed at 20:00 local time . . .

Again, I have a Scottish friend whom I meet regularly several times a year in Munich and Leipzig (don't ask . . .). He is nearly 76 now and after a full day with friends (usually spent practising our schoolboy German:-) we usually stay up late quaffing ale in the hotel bar until well after midnight because he is a good conversationalist and we have so many interesting things to talk about - and then he usually gets down to breakfast before me, having been out to try and buy an English newspaper . . .

So, it is probably neither when you go nor the age of your travelling companions which is important, but where you go, and with whom . . .

Good luck at Christmas - but do try a long-haul touring holiday!

Drink tea all day!!!! The mind boggles. Chance might have been a fine thing on all of my JY holidays, not that I'm a great tea drinker. If you go for a long haul touring or explore holiday you might find you want an early night here and there what with early morning starts and full on days, sometimes getting back too late to have time to freshen up and change before dinner in the evenings. One thing I have never come across is tea drinkers. Most people like to enjoy a drink either before dinner (given time), with dinner, and some after an evening meal, it's each to their own. And yes, like some have already said, age is just a number, at the end of the day it's health and stamina that counts not age, and believe me there are many 70 - 80+ out there who have both.

Pick a touring or explore holiday that you like the look of and give it a go, you will no doubt find it vastly different from the tea drinkers experience you had.

Enjoy any future JY holidays

The majority of travellers are between 50 & 70 but this can vary due to type of holiday and where you are going.

Saying that i've met many younger and older on the holidays i've done and I'll add its not always the younger ones that are last to bed, quite often some very lively charactors at thetop end of the age range.

Personally I'm often one of the last in the bar but among the first to breakfast in the morning as find i don't need lots of sleep (5 or 6 hours is enough for me). Yes some do go early and appreciate they need more sleep (we are all different) but have never had a holiday with JY and not found someone to stay up later.

Will add if you are looking at christmas holidays i've found the age range is often older at that time of year, thats my experience but have enjoyed all the trips i've done.

Thanks guys for your comments, I think I was just unlucky on the last singles holiday. After reading lots of reviews about Just You and the different types of trips away, I'm going to book Lake Bled for Christmas:)
