As the Oz trip is a few weeks away from home I just wondered if anyone had any advice as to how much to budget for day to day expenses?

I know its quite an individual decision, but some advice would be useful - especially over how much cash to take and whether travellers cheques are useful in addition to credt/debit cards?

Thanks, Chris

I only ever take cash in local currancy and a card with me don't forget to contact the card company to let them know your travelling and spending money. The amount all depend if you have to buy lots of meals and pay for your optional tours. So I would budget into the tours and put that money to one side then, run a general amount for eating/drinking and having fun. I did get a phone card to phone home which worked out really well, not much money and lots of talk time.

I've been looking in to the idea of a pre-paid cash card. You load your currency on it at home and then can use it like a debit card in shops, restaurants and to withdraw cash. Travelex does an Australian dollar one.

As to how much to take - it's a tricky one as it depends how much you eat / drink, how many souvenirs you like to buy and how many excursions you want to do. The brochure can help you with what meals are included each day so you can work out what you have to buy yourself. If you look at some of the other Australia posts there is a guide as to what other excursions are available and their cost. For my trip I intend to take half cash, half loaded on a prepaid card, along with a credit card for emergencies.

Hope this helps
