This is my first solo trip - slightly nervous.

Do we just look for the Just You rep at Cape Town airport ? Is it worth taking cash or will everywhere be cards ? Not been out of Europe before so whole new experience

Hi Emmac,

I did this tour in October 2022 and there is a review on the review page if you have not already seen it.

However, as regards your specific questions:-

  1. Your tour manager/holiday director (TM/HD) may travel out with you in which case they will meet you at check in. In that event they will tell you where to meet at the other end - usually at baggage reclaim. On my trip out TM/HD was based in SA and met us in Cape Town. In this event you disembark and proceed to immigration where you present your passport etc and once formalities there are completed you head to baggage reclaim to get your case and then exit through the green channel. Much as you do anywhere and it is all well signed. Our TM/HD was waiting for us as we exited the green channel and was holding a Just You board to identify herself. This is where the JY luggage tags come in useful as it helps the TM/HD spot you! JY should be able to tell you where you will meet your TM/HD even if they can't yet say who it is.

  2. As regards money I prefer to carry cash but each to their own. On our trip some used cash and others used cards. I just prefer cash for day to day spending and as you travel round there are lots of souvenir stalls who I suspect are not always geared up for cards. In places like restaurants then cards would, I expect, be widely accepted. There was a thread about this somewhere! I did not use cash machines so was not looking out for these but lunch etc stops are usually at good sized service etc stations with shops, cafes etc so I suspect there would be machines there if you needed one. Otherwise I am sure your TM/HD could find a machine for you.

Anything more specific then do ask.

Ian

Hi Emmac

I am also on the South Africa Experience in September 2023 and I'm really looking forward to it.  I booked it earlier in the year, so up until now it has seemed a long way off.  Now that I have just over a month to go, I am getting really excited.  I have recently had vaccinations and need to check if I need to have malaria tablets.  I have read through Ian's review of the trip and that is very useful, thank you Ian.  Some of the other hints and tips on this site are also useful too.  Hopefully we will meet some of our fellow travellers at the airport.

Hello,

I'm going on the South Africa trip too. I'm flying down on a connecting flight from Newcastle and will have quite a bit of time to wait at Heathrow - I'll try and keep the Just You tag on my hand luggage visible so that anyone on the trip can come and find me when they arrive.

Really looking forward to it and to meeting my fellow travellers - just need to get myself organised now!

Traveling solo for the first time can be both exciting and nerve-wracking, but it's a great opportunity for personal growth and adventure. I advise you to carry some cash for small expenses, like taxis or purchases from local markets.
