Hi all,

Way back in February 2015 we posted a suggestion that we might introduce ski holidays into our programme for Just You. I received a mixture of responses which included questions about the type of resorts and countries we would visit.

Now I have investigated the opportunities, I would like to run them past you to see if again it’s something you would like to do whether you are a beginner or an experienced skier.

I have the opportunity to create a selection of ski holidays in Austria, Switzerland & Italy. In well-known top skiing resorts in the mid-season January & March staying in some great hotels, brilliant locations at an affordable price.

There would of course be a Just You skiing Tour manager to accompany the groups.

If you were interested in these holidays would you prefer we

1)     included in the price your equipment , ski school  &  Lift Pass

or

2)     Purchase your equipment, lift pass & ski school in resort?

As always at Just You we like to know what you need and as this is a specialist activity holiday, it would help me to understand the best way to go ahead if we feel there is demand for some new and exciting activity product.

Looking forward to hearing your responses and I shall take it from there.

Have a lovely weekend and thanks again for your help

Hi Alicia

Unfortunately ski holiday is not for me - too old to learn!

Hi Alicia, great news, would love to see skiing holidays included. Would be happy to sign up for holidays in well known resorts. (I know one of your competitors does skiing holidays, but I've never heard of the resorts they go to, so have never been interested.)

Some people have their own boots and/or skis so wouldn't be interested to hire equipment. Could you offer each element separately so people could choose before they went if they wanted to pay in advance, as if they were "optional excursions"? I think, from my point of view, I would like to have paid for skis, boots etc in advance and there be arrangements somewhere at/near the hotel where they were expecting us and you could get that sorted immediately on arrival - it can be an awful faff. I think I would also be happy to pay for the lift pass in advance so that was sorted too. But not sure about ski school, might like to wait till I was in resort and mix and match options - probably take ski school the first day to get oriented and then see how things went.

Courmayeur (Italy) and Ischgl (Austria) are my favourite resorts in Europe, so if you go to either of these that would be perfect .......

Am planning to book a holiday (I hope the Cambodia, Laos trip) for early next year when the new brochure (and dates for 2017 I hope) comes out later this month/early next month, but I would love to be able to book a skiing holiday too.

Dear Alicia , I am writing as a regular skier for over 20 years, having been to various resorts in Italy, Austria and Andorra, always staying in Hotels. It is definitely not a good idea to include, ski equipment, lift passes and lessons in the included price, as there is such arrange of options depending on ones ability and age. It is better to include the Hotel, flight and transfer in the Basic price and include all the other items as optional extras. This is what  all 3 of the specialist ski holiday operators do, and I have traveled with all of them.

With complete beginners (I was aged 45 when I started to learn to ski), most operators offer an inclusive package, with equipment, lessons and ski pass. For beginners they quite often only need a local ski pass.

As people progress,  they often start to buy some of their own equipment. After 2 years I bought my own boots,  and have subsequently bought another pair. Helmets are compulsory if you are having lessons, in all countries. I also have bought my own. I have been more than 20 times now and still hire skies. They are usually  3 grades available to hire from beginners to advance ( which I now hire). These are all at different prices wherever you go.

With lift passes there is quite often a local area pass and and total area pass available, again both at different prices, as is also the time when you go, ie low, middle or high season. Finally they are different prices depending on ones age. Most offer reductions in price for age 60, or 65 or as in Soldeu, Andorra where I went this year, they were free if you were 70 or over. All resorts vary and are not even the same for all resorts in a country. (By the way I am aged 69 and hope to be going again next year. Looking at Madonna di Campiglio in Italy which is really lovely resort. Very good for intermediate skiing.

What usually happens is one purchases the  optional extras and the tour operator's representative gives out various vouchers on the transfer bus. These are then exchanged in the resort for what you require. This year I needed skis, for which one has to take your boots to the hire shop so the skis can be correctly adjusted. After which I had to go to the Lift Pass Pass office, and show my passport tot get the age reduction. All this was done in about half an hour, after having checked in in the hotel. By the way all hotels have locker rooms to leave your ski equipment in, it is never taken back to the hotel rooms.

One final thought is if people are taking their own equipment they usually need an extra luggage allowance, boots alone weigh about 5kgs, and skis and snowboards are taking on separately.  These are subject to extra charges too.Quite a lot of people now like to learn to snowboard. My 65 year old brother snowboards and has done for years.

Do hope this helps

Lesley RK new to the forum, but I felt somebody needed to let you know how skiing holidays really work. Very different to other holidays!  So far have been to Istanbul with  Just You as a try out, and last year went to Cuba, with Just You,which was fantastic, somewhere I had been wanting to go since I was quite young. Looking at St Lucia for this year

Hi Lesley,  Thanks for  the feedback, I have worked for a couple of large ski companies in my past and in ski resorts  and of course a big skier myself, hence i feel that Just You can take this on board and provide a Just You skiing experience , if of course we have the customers who would like to join a group of single traveller skiers.

Our partners in the ski resorts are keen to help us get the most out of the week  .

Thanks again so much for the feedback its really valuable and will help us create some great products :shy:

I think that the lift pass, ski school and equipment should be optional extras because not everyone will need everything. I'm glad I read this because I was just about to get rid of all my ski gear thinking that I would never be going again

Now that Classic Ski/Classic Alpine Ski Club is no longer available I am trying to find another company catering for "Discerning, Mature Skiers" who, like myself, have run out of friends to ski with. I would certainly have a go with you if you decide to go ahead with the project.
