I regularly read messages from new members asking where to travel first and all of our travellers share their own experiences which is great (please carry on). I thought it might be nice if we occasionally posted a thread to provide a little travel inspiration too. With this in mind, we've put our heads together and decided to ask...have you thought about visiting the Isle of Man?

This is a beautiful and beguiling island that should be on everyone’s ‘must visit’ list. The island is proud of its railway history and on the Isle of Man Heritage Rail Adventures tour you get to see this unique island on a mix of steam trains and the Manx Electric Railway. You’ll be based in the capital, Douglas, and have the opportunity to explore seaside towns of Port Erin and Castletown. Your heritage pass, which can be used throughout your stay, allows you entry to all of the Manx National Heritage sites including Peel Castle, House of Manannan and Castle Rushen. And, with the upcoming elections did you know the Isle of Man has the oldest continuous parliament in the world!

For more information why not visit www.justyou.co.uk/en-gb/tours/isle-of-man-heritage-rail-adventures/?internal_promotion=community.

Kindest regards,

Julia

I do understand it is a beautiful place to visit by all accounts, but not for me..

Is there any chance by the full new brochure out September if there will be more animals! For me to see as in BIG animals..

I would love to do this trip. Just a bit apprehensive about getting from Liverpool station to the ferry. Could we possibly have a bit more information on ferry timings, where any overnight stays are needed in Liverpool, and if so, the best place to stay. Travel to airports is reasonably straightforward, if expensive . Making your own way to ferries or Eurostar needs a bit more planning. Have JY considered offering overnight hotels with transfer to port or station packages?

Hi Julia

Yes, I want to visit the Isle of Man. In fact I would like to visit all destinations in the brochure! It's just a matter of finding time. Will consider next year when I hope to have more time on my hands.

Regards

Sylvia

Hi Julia, I took my late mother to the Isle of Man around three or four years ago and we had a lovely week there. It's like stepping back in time and I loved the steam trains and trams. If you'd like somewhere different but don't want to travel too far, it is a nice, gentle destination. The reviews of this tour on Feefo have been excellent.

Cheers,

Bob

I have considered this holiday but would not be happy travelling from Liverpool.

I normally either drive to an airport or use National Express which drops me outside the terminal. I cannot find a way to get to Liverpool ferry which is anywhere near as convenient as this.

I would prefer to either fly, at extra cost (preferably from Birmingham) or take ferry from Heysham. It would take me 40 minutes longer to drive to Heysham rather than Liverpool but I could park next to the port. The crossing time is 45min longer but I would consider this to be part of the holiday.

Hello Julia,

This sounds interesting, but definately not by ferry as I am a poor sailor. Some of my neighbours went there for the TT races and a sudden storm blew up and they were unable to dock for 23 hours!

Hi Cindy,

Like you I like countries that have an abundance of wildlife. I know you have done Kenya - have you been to South Africa (the day trip to Botswana on the Zambia add-on had THE best wildlife)? Also Costa Rica was fantastic for wildlife. I haven't done Namibia yet, but that is on the list for next year too.

Isle of Man is not for me either.

Cheers,

Hils

Hi

No I have not done either of those, what I am really after is a good safari tour with out city tours etc, in my dream world I would love safari, Safari and even more safari, with an optional lazy few days, to recover from the animal overload! I await September brochure.

I am doing the long hauls while the body is still able!!, if I get more years then I can do short haul..

I visited a couple of times as a child and while it is a lovely place it doesn't interest me as I prefer somewhere abroad.

For those people put off by Liveool, please don't believe all the bad press it gets. Like any city it has good and bad points but it is a very well policed and safe city. It is a short taxi ride from the station to the ferry terminal and there are several hotels within a few minutes walk of the terminal. Passengers on cruise liners calling at Liverpool consistently vote the city as their favourite port of call.

Of you fancy sailing to the Isle of Mann, go for it.

Hello All,

I last went to Isle of Man in August 1973, the week following the Summerland Fire disaster. My Dad had a Vauxhall Victor, a large car with us 4 kids and Mum. The Steam Packet Company went overnight from Liverpool to Douglas. We stayed at Onchan at the Howstrake Holiday camp. Think they based Hi de Hi on that camp 😛

Just looked at this trip as I have a weeks holiday in July, shame it is 3 weeks later or I would have booked it 😞 Looks like it might be Albi/ Carcassonne as it is perfect timing for me

Thanks for that information. It's what I would like to have been available from JY. The same applies to the Jersey tour from Poole. It's relatively easy to search for information about airports online, but information about ports is more difficult to find. If you are travelling from a distance, it's important to know departure and return times before you book, so you can work out the best and hopefully, least expensive travel options.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I'm with Cindy and Hils with the safari thing. I understand that you want to make the holidays as varied as possible, but for me the African holidays have too much sight seeing and not enough game drives. Of course this hasn't put me off from going on them and having the most incredible experiences but the ideal for me is a trip along the lines of one of your competitors to Tanzania which was (approximately) 8 days doing game drives each day, followed by 4 days on Zanzibar relaxing on the beach to get over all those early starts. And not wishing to upset Bob, but that holiday also features a sunrise balloon ride over the Serengeti! If JY could do something along those lines it would be fantastic. Of course as Hils says there is also Botswana which would be a dream destination for safari fans.

Hi I'm feeling guilty for hijacking this thread, but I agree completely with Sally - for me a Tanzania safari (Serengeti and Ngorongoro) with a few days to relax and a bit of sight seeing on Zanzibar would be perfect! And as for a sunrise balloon ride, wow!!

Now back to the Isle of Man, we stayed near Laxey and it is a lovely spot, central for all the island's delights.

Best wishes,

Bob

I am going on this holiday on 7th May. The Isle of Man is somewhere I have always wanted to go and it looks beautiful in travel programmes. I also like trying out public transport in this country and others - travelling by train in Australia was amazing. One big let down and I feel a bit cheated - it is listed as a 5 day holiday but on day 1 we don't leave Liverpool until 7pm and arrive in Douglas at 10 pm - hardly counts as a days holiday!! and no dinner provided.

I too agree with Sally regarding safaris/'Big Animal' holidays. I did South Africa with Zambia add-on in 2013 and it was fantastic. Both Kruger in SA and Chobe in Zambia were wonderful and have left me with lots of enthusiasm to see more big game & wildlife. The Tanzania holiday in the other brochure looks just right. Hopefully JY will take note of all the comments being made. I don't think there will be much problem filling the places.

I do get where members are coming from with the desire for far flung holidays but it isn't for everyone. Shorter holidays near to home are needed for first timers, those on a low budget and people who are unable to take more than a week or two at most at one time. I hope JY doesn't price itself out of the market for many singles who are not blessed with well paid jobs but want to be able to travel without the need to 'phone a friend'

H Jonah (Chris!),

I agree with all you have said and I think it is a strength of JY that they offer such a variety of holidays to suit all budgets and needs - I hope this never changes. The long haul tours are getting very expensive though!

Best wishes,

Bob

I agree Jonah. Although I do two or more long hauls a year, I also like to take the odd break. I am doing Monet's Garden in a few weeks. I would like slightly longer breaks, measured in "nights" rather than more misleading days as is common practice for most tour operators. Returning to the original thread, I would certainly be in tested in gong to the Isle of Man, but for a bit longer than the current tour, could some extra free time be added?
