I took a normal hard shell case - but I also brought a small holdall inside it, in case I couldn't bring my case to the lodges.  As it turned out, we had the option to bring our cases which is what I did.  I'm not sure what advice you have been given for the lodges so that might be a factor in what you pack.

Hi, this may sound like a silly question but what type of case did people take to Borneo?  Do you need a rucksack or will a,  howecer  nomal suitcase be ok?

Yes you'll need ur full suitcase for borneo plus ur rucksack for 3 nights at the lodge whilst ur main case remains in hotel storage,  however if u wish you can take ur main suitcase with you on the boat as you do have a choice
