Oh my goodness Bob am feeling quite nervous about the airport on my upcoming trip. Have done two previous trips with Just You and didnt have probs meeting up with fellow travellers or got lost as you have, You have now made me feel apprehensive that things do go wrong.

Hi Valerie,

I'm about to do my 11th JY trip (I was on the same one as Bob to Vietnam), and although airports can sometimes be a bit daunting, I have found the easiest, and quickest, thing to do is ASK someone official for directions/help etc. rather than worrying about getting lost. You will be fine, just relax and enjoy!

Cheers,

Hi Valerie,

That's very good advice from Hils. When we were returning from Lake Garda earlier this year, we were separated from some of the group because they decided they knew how to get to the Departure Gates. I wasn't quite sure, so asked an "Official" and it was in completely the opposite direction!!!

Good luck.

Regards.

Getting through airports doesn't have to be a hassle. JY have reps at all check ins to help you through the process and point you to security. The security process takes as long as it takes, although most uk airports have speeded up the process over that last year or so. Just remember to have your plastic bag of liquid items, max 100ml per bottle or tube, to hand. New regs means that all electronic items, camera,, ipod,, tablets, phones etc , need to be charged so if asked, you can demonstrate they are working. Again, have these easily to hand. After security, it's wise to check how to get to your departure gate, and roughly how long it will take to get there. At Heathrow terminal five you need to allow time to go by transit train to the gates. Then, you can use any remaining time to hit duty free, or relax with a drink and a bite to eat. Once your flight is called, head to the gate. Arriving at the airport in good time is the key to a stressfree departure. Happy landings.

What a wonderful explanation, and thank you for taking the time and thinking of others.

It's as if you have worked at an airport, ( I worked for 18 years at airport)

Another very helpful tip for those that are nervous. MOST international airports have a website.

On the website you'll often find a link to TERMINAL MAPS, they normally show the arrival and departures separately. They will give you a good visual, on what services are available. You can even print them off in advance of your trip.

Arrivals will show Immigration and they lay of out of baggage reclaim then customs, and Pick up points for when you exit the terminal.

Departures will show you the location of check in desks, security, toilets, elevators, escalators, Seating areas with power outlets shops, food, etc. both Landside (before security) and Airside (after security- = Duty free shopping)

Also if you have an special needs, as in you can't walk distances, then you know in advance to pre-book "special services" (the people who drive you around on a golf cart or push you in a wheel chair), the maps will show you the various waiting points that the little buggies collect you from.

I always look up an airport before I travel, I then know if I have to catch a monorail between areas, and I feel secure in where I am going.

Also there are two wonderful websites- Seat Guru and Gate Guru

Seat Guru will show you the particular aircraft you are travelling on if you know your flight number,

It shows Best seats, Ok seats and NOT good seats, where the toilets and Galleys(kitchens) are located. You can't book your seat on this site, it only enables you to make an informed decision with the airline, either checking in on line at home, or at the terminal.

Gate Guru, will again show you the layout of the airport and how to get there from the departure lounge (duty free shopping)

I hope this helps others.

Seat Guru isn't much use if you are on the usual JY group ticket, when you can only check in at the airport. The best seats are always already booked by those with individual PNRs. If you upgrade a flight, it's usually an idividual booking, with a personal PNR. Depending on the airline flown, it's often possible to choose your seat when you book. Otherwise you can do it yourself by "managing your booking" online.
