Good Morning

Just a short(ish) review of this tour from which I have just returned. As it was the first time that this tour had operated I went with an open mind, which was just as well because from day one there were a few problems, ranging from hotels to the actual journey.  A couple of the hotels were changed because they simply weren't up to the usual JY standard.

The Kasbah style hotel near Merzouga just wasn't suitable for JY customers, it was more for adventure holiday customers such as the customers of G adventures. However, being in the middle of the desert I didn't see any other type of hotel, they were all Kasbah style. On the plus side whilst there we all enjoyed the four wheel drive into the dunes to see the sunset and the following morning eight of us enjoyed our optional camel ride in the dunes to see the sunrise.

We travelled long distances by coach most days. We crossed large fertile plains, travelled along mountain passes in the High Atlas mountains, across deserts and along the coast. Impressive scenery. Service being slow whenever we had a break had a knock on effect invariably making late check-ins at hotels. Facilities were usually good at comfort breaks, a few Dirham being the norm to tip. In  fact, tipping is a big part of Moroccan culture.

There were 30 of us in the group. Our TM Tracey and local guide Mohammed worked really hard to try to make this holiday a success and immediately sorted out any issues. Mohammed's English wasn't the best and at times we struggled to understand him, but this was certainly balanced by his enthusiasm. We had a good coach and we felt safe with our coach driver Hassan, but personally I think he had to do too much driving on many days, with just short breaks.

My highlights of the holiday include Fez and going into the old Medina, which dates back to year 800 (ish) with it's narrow alleyways, we would soon  have been lost without a local guide. It was like being transported back into medieval times. It even seemed quite biblical with us often having to step aside to allow donkeys laden with goods led by their owners, pass us by. Another highlight in Fez was the world famous tannery.

Marrakech's  UNESCO listed square of Jemma El-Fna didn't fail to impress. On our evening visit we sat on a high terrace in a cafe, sipping mint tea (not me, felts safer to drink cola) watching the entertainment unfold. Here we weren't harassed by the locals expecting tips from us for watching the little shows and taking photos.

On the last day of the holiday in Marrakech we visited the grand Bahai Palace before going to a cookery class. The cookery class held in a riad in the medina, was a great success. The riad was "Dar Cherifa" and was a coffee bar. It was quite unbelievable entering this beautiful building through a very small door tucked away in a very narrow alleyway. I didn't partake of the class but just watched it, which was mainly chopping up fruit and veg. It was our lunch and although we had to wait a long time for the chicken to cook, I think we all voted the class as a hit.

Our last evening was at Chez Ali, a man made tourist attraction, which attracted coach loads of tourists. We had dinner which wasn't great in sumptuous Berber tents (not at all like the real rag tag ones in the desert), with various entertainers. After dinner, outside, we watched a spectacular horse show, part of which was the traditional Fantasia or gunpowder race. I had previously watched Fantasia on the b each at Essaouira, which would be a lovely place for a two night stay. At the end of Fantasia and our final night a lot of the group left on a high, dancing back to the coach.

All in all this can become a super holiday but JY do need to rejig it before the next departure. I have written to Customer Services as now doubt a few others have regarding the holiday.

Anyone on the tour who wishes to add further thoughts to my review, I would like to read them.

Regards,

Di

Hi Di

Thanks for taking the time to post a review, it is always good to have details when it is a new tour.  Let's hope Just You take on board your comments.

Hi Di

So sorry to read that this trip did not live up to your expectations. There are always going to be some teething problems with the first new trip, but it seems that perhaps not a lot of research was done concerning the hotels. Hopefully all your comments will be taken on board and the subsequent trips will run smoothly. I did Christmas in Marrakech in December 2014 and it was a lovely trip. Of course, we just stayed in one hotel! We also did Chez Ali and the food there was not brilliant but the show was.

Hi Sue

Thank you for your response.

This holiday was fully booked and I had the last place, only one other Forum user on the Tour.

Kind Regards

Sorry I can't get my breath.

Dont people look at maps and distances before they go ?

I did this tour with Just you about 13 years ago and you have to take these countries as they are and experience the difference

Morocco is a very poor country so we should not expect the same standards as in Britain

I am 75 this year so not a spring chicken but not quite sure what is meant by " Just You standards"

Yours Sue

Who is off next week on my 16th Justyou/Travelsphere hol

Hello Susanxyz

Apologies if my review was too long.

I certainly appreciate the difference in various cultures and distances travelled on some tours and am the least likely person to grumble about anything.

Had you been on this tour you would have understood what I meant by JY standards. One example a blood stained dirty sheet in one of my hotel rooms was certainly not acceptable, which I didn't tell the TM about because she had other issues to deal with and was frantically trying to get the hotel changed at 9.30pm. Unfortunately it was impossible for her and the local guide to get another hotel that late at night.

I am not a spring chicken either and have done 20 JY tours most of which have been long haul and 9 TS tours, the first TS tour in 2002 and the first JY in 2005.

I have also got another 3 inaugural JY tours booked which I am looking forward to, as I am one of the JY addicts.

Regards

Diane

This tour was beyond 'teething problems" and I sent a letter of complaint to Just You 3 weeks ago and have yet to receive any acknowledgement of it.  If this forum is being monitored by customer services please can you contact me.

Hi Cathryn,

I'm sorry to hear this. Our Customer Care team has received your letter and in accordance with ABTA has 28 days to respond, which will be by April 18th.

The letter should be finalised this week.

Many thanks,

Vickie

Thank you all for your comments. Unless there is a massive change for the better, this is one tour definitely off my wish list. I do hope you get a satisfactory reply soon. It’s disappointing to hear that such a serious complaint has taken so long to be acknowledged

From what I hear on the grapevine, this tour had numerous problems, and rather more than Di has mentioned in her review. ‘Beyond teething problems’ would seem a more accurate description from what I’ve heard, and I suspect that Di was being extremely kind to JY when writing her summary.

Vickie - ‘In accordance with ABTA we have 28 days to respond, which will be by April 18th’! How poor a response is that? Oh, we’ve got 28 days, so the fact you’ve not had a reply is fine! Sorry, but I don’t think it is. Quite apart from the fact that these issues should never have arisen in the first place, had the tour been designed correctly with the proper checks and balances, how about sending a letter acknowledging receipt of the said complaint and confirming that JY would respond further within 28 days? It seems that the Customer Care team need a lesson in...well, customer care!

Hi Mike,

Apologies, I just meant to explain why our response hasn't been received yet.

Our Customer Care team acknowledged the letter on March 21. We will always acknowledge all letters received and explain that we will provide a full response within 28 days.

Please let me know if the acknowledgement was not received as I will inform our Customer Care team and ask them to resend.

Many thanks,

Vickie

Hi Mike

I had sent a long letter to Customer Services as soon as we returned from this holiday and last week I received a lovely letter from Customer Services, explaining what had happened, plus a cheque for compensation.

Thank you for your post. Mike, will mention to you as you are a photographer, I did take over 500 photos. Seeing the Saharan dunes at sunrise on a camel was excellent but personally and  I think that you may agree, the Sossusvlei dunes can't be easily beaten.

Catherine, if you haven't already heard from Customer Services by now, I am certain  you will do very soon.

Sarah, I am sure that there will be no repetition of the problems we had for future groups, should you look at this tour.

Kind Regards

Di
