Hi,

I'm going to New York in September and I was wondering what people usually do for holiday money and roughly how much is advisable to take (I am not planning on doing a lot of shopping so mainly essential money to cover food etc and a bit of shopping)?

Thank you,

Donna

Hi Donna,

The New York City break is on a B&B basis so you'll need to think about lunches and dinners. The good thing about New York is there is so much choice and something for every budget. When I was out there, I budgeted meals based on London prices and this was sufficient.

Tipping is common in the USA - when calculating the tip in restaurants and bars, 15-20% of the bill is usually appreciated, sometimes the tip is automatically added to the bill and when in taxi cabs (should you use one while you are away), 10% of the posted fare is usually appreciated. Tips are of course discretionary however there will be occasions when you are expected to tip.

Kindest regards,

Julia

I have been to New York twice and I agree with what Julia has said. Also please take inboard there is so much to do and see, I don't know what you intend to do or if you have free time but here are a few things I have done and can recommend. Most of these do cost, some you will get prices online.

9/11 Museum

Statue of liberty both of these I arranged and paid for online in the UK before I went..saved in queuing up and paying on the day and you are fast tracked, well worth doing.

Horse drawn buggy ride around Central Park, myself and 3 other ladies split the cost of this, they are by the entrance do ASK price before you get on.

Lots of museums some are free but they do like a donation if you can. I went to a very interesting Jewish Museum.

If you have time queue for the cheap theatre tickets well worth doing some great shows to see.

There is a revolving restaurant, which I had a meal at the views are amazing.

I did do helicopter flight over New York well worth doing again amazing views,

A trip to Macy's is well worth doing.

So depending on what it is you want to do, and I would really recommend you doing all you can, this will add to the amount of money you might need to take.

Have a great time there is so much to do and see you will have a great time

Thank you Julia and Cindy your advice is appreciated.

I think I have hopefully budgeted for the above scenarios with the money I have chosen to take.

As it is my first trip there I'm not sure what I will want to do, but hopefully as much as possible as I want to make the most of my time there.

I plan to go on all the planned excursions and am still thinking about the helicopter flight, I thought I'd wait to book that when I was there depending upon how I feel but have a feeling I'll end up going on it.

Thank you

Donna
