Hi

I've just booked Andulusia for May. I was told I may not be able to manage the tour to the Alhambra palace because I've requested assistance at the airport. I can't climb but can manage to walk, though not at speed, a couple of hundred yards, due to joint pain. I was wondering if anyone who has been there could tell me exactly how limiting the terrain is. I would really like to go there but you have to pre book

I was on the Christmas Andalucia trip and went to Alhambra.

We were dropped outside the main entrance, and there is a 400 yd "road" up the actual entrance, this is smooth tarmac, but has a modest upward slope - it may be possible for you to arrange transport for this 400 yds stretch.

I would guess that the "main" tour involved walking around 800/1000 yds; from memory there are no real flights of steps, but lots of areas in the palace with a few steps up & down, and areas where you would have substantial problems if you can only walk very short distances. There were frequent stops while the guide explained something, but nowhere I can recall where you could sit down. The tour is very slow paced, because of the frequent stops to look at things, have them explained etc.

At the end of the tour, we went to the gardens, this involved a further 600/800 yds of walking, but can be omitted easily, and a number of the group took the short cut back to the entrance.

I should add that Alhambra was for me, the one of the highlights of the holiday, but (again to me) if you can only walk 200 yds or so, then it will be very difficult for you.

Our tour director was Claire, and I believe she does many of these holidays. She is really, really helpful, and I'm sure if JY were to contact her on your behalf she would be much better placed than me to advise you.

Hope that helps.

Hi Marlane,

I went on this holiday last year and did the tour to the Alhambra. There is a lot of standing around as well as walking and it isn't possible to leave the group once the tour has begun. There are few opportunities to rest and nowhere to sit until near the end. I can't remember how long the tour took but it must have been 2 to 3 hours long. Sorry to say this but I think that it would be very difficult for you. Some of our group found it very difficult to keep up and they hadn't required assistance at the airport.

I did this trip back in 2010 and seem to remember that there was certainly parts of the palace that a couple of people didn't do because of walking difficulties. However they did get to other areas it was a case of the guide telling them where to meet the rest of the group when we did the less accesible areas.

Would think it best if you talk with a JY holiday advisor.

Your guide sounds more sympathetic, Mick. Ours was quite adamant that they couldn't leave the group until we reached seats where they could wait when we went to the gardens. There also seemed to be more security going from one area to another unlike the last time I was there, not that many years ago. I think it spoiled the day a bit for some. As Mick says it would be better to speak to an advisor as they may be able to sort something out for you..
