I think it would be a good idea if all tour managers carried a local mobile phone and gave the number to all the travellers for use in emergencies. I have known cases when clients have had difficulty contacting the tour manager when they have had a medical problem “out of hours” and a direct phone number would be very useful. I realise there is a UK emergency number but this can cause delays.

I also think it would be a good idea if, on a voluntary basis, the tour manager asked for the number the clients can be contacted on whilst on holiday. I know the office has UK contact details but when on holiday I almost always have a local sim card and JY do not have this number.

I have known tour managers to do this but most do not.

Hi Davidj

I've been informed that we instruct all Tour Managers to have mobiles and to ensure they are contactable by travellers at all times.

If you have encountered a Tour Manager who has not provided this, please could you let me know as we would like to follow it up.

Kindest regards,

Julia

Can I just say other than NZ tour I have never been given the manger mobile number nor even there room number.

Other than NZ no manager has asked for people mobile phone numbers either.... I must say Sarah on the NZ tour was spot in with her paperwork and had peoples details even down to their passport number JUST IN case!!..and who they were insured by. I found this comforting.

the only information I have ever been given is towards the 24 hour emergency phone number in England.!!

Now I know this I will endeavour to get their information ASAP...

Hello Julia

I am not saying that I have encountered any tour managers who do not carrying a mobile or in theory are not contactable at all times. However, it is a case of how they are available.

I know of a case where someone who had a problem at night and there was a delay due to the hotel reception being reluctant and slow to contact the tour manager.

On my last holiday I had a problem with the lock being faulty when I returned to my room at night. I did not make any attempt to contact the tour manager as I am an experienced traveller and dealt with it myself. Had it have been a real emergency it could have been a problem as none of the staff spoke English!

On one of the tours I was on the manager gave out his local mobile number and explained in detail how to contact it from a UK or local mobile. I thought this was excellent.

I think my suggestion would increase the safety of your clients

Hello Julia

Really?? I have been on 2 short haul and 12 long haul holidays with JY and only one TM has ever given a contact number voluntarily.

I once asked a TM what happened if we were taken ill in the night and was told to contact reception who would ring them, I took this to be the norm so have never asked again. Are you saying TMs should be giving us their emergency contact numbers? Apart from the one, in my experience TMs have never mentioned anything about contact details, mobile or otherwise. Surely it can't just be the holidays I've been on where this has happened, the fact that this subject has been brought up would suggest it isn't.

Kind regards

Hi

I have only been on two JY holidays. The first one the TM slept in the hotel in case he was needed. He said this was a JY requirement, and we had his mobile number - his home was 3km away.

On the other the TM gave us her phone number, written down on a timetable she had made for us.

I assumed all JY TM's gave out a mobile number.

I've been on 6 JY holidays so far. On all of them the TM was in the same hotel as the group; in 3 or 4 cases the TM gave us their mobile number for emergencies. Having their number wasn't much use to me, however, because I have a pay-as-you-go mobile which I understand only works in the UK (although I have been able to phone home from some countries to check my answerphone).

I agree that it would be a good idea for everyone to have a contact number for the TM, even if (like me) they couldn't use it. On a holiday NOT with JY, we weren't given any number and several members of the group turned up at the wrong amphitheatre; nearly an hour after our supposed departure time the TM had to send the rest of us on and go back to search the site for them. She only found them because they had the number for our hotel, phoned it and got Reception to call the TM to ask where she was!!

Must agree with others on the majority of holidays I've done we have been given the tour managers number, can think of one occasion it didn't happen and another we had to ask.

Hello

I went on a holiday to Kusadasi in 2012. I asked the tour manager if I could have her mobile phone number as I was concerned as to what would happen if there was an emergency. She refused making an excuse that there had been problems in the past with tour managers being stalked. She was also reluctant to give me her hotel room number. In fact I did have an emergency and she just happened to be in the reception area at that point. I am not sure what I would have done otherwise.

Best regards.

I must agree that on the majority of holidays, the Tour Manager's phone number was printed onto every map we were given when on any excursions. I always made a point of inputting into my phone as soon as I received it.

I have been on 4 Just You holidays and have never been given tour manager's phone number. I did not know that we could ask for the number if not given voluntarily.
