Please could you let me know if there always enough places on excursions for all people on the tours? I am booked for April 2013 and was told I would have to wait until January 2013 before I would be given a list of available excursions to book. This is my first holiday with Just You and I'm keen to make the most of it, so was wondering if excursions are just available on a first come first served basis, i.e. is it a race to book as soon as the information is released to travellers? Thank you. Sue

Hi Ben,

Thank you for the information above it's very useful. I have just booked to go on this trip in May '13.It's the first time i have travelled on my own I am confussed by all the tours at the Grand Canyon, too many to pick from 🙂 have you been on these? Would you have any recommendations of which one to go for?

Can you pay for the excursions before you travel? And can you pay in GBP if you decide to do them when you are there?

I hope you have a fantastic time Sue. Jo

Hi Sue

I have just returned from this trip which was fantastic - my only complaint really was the fact the Alcatraz was not part of the just you package and by the time we arrived there - we were too late to book it as we only had 2 days in SF - so if you want to see it - my advice would be to book it yourself in advance - other than that it was a fantastic trip - it was my first JY holiday but am already planning another now ! Have fun - and if you have Kim Valencia as your guide - she is excellent really knows her stuff .

Hi Sue

I was on the same trip as Linda (Hi Linda!!), this being my 2nd JY holiday but my first time to the US. I had a fantastic time and would echo what Linda says about Kim Valencia - she is fantastic (organised, funny, got loads of tales to tell, and really knows her stuff!).

In San Fran free time is limited but there is enough to visit Alcatraz but you will need to book in advance - just go onto the Alcatraz cruise website and book a ferry crossing online (costs $28 for an adult) - you can even print off your ticket in advance. If you wait until you get there they are usually booked up at least a couple of days in advance (depending on time of year).

With regards to optional excursions, there are plenty of spaces available - some of our tour made decisions on the day to join in with sone of them (depends on the trip obviously as to how late you can leave it to decide). some you can pay for in advance (such as Grand Canyon flights etc) but the smaller ones you can pay in dollars when you are there.

I would recommend Las Vegas by night (Freemont Street experience is a must do); Universal Studios (it is more than just a theme park); Palm Springs Ariel Tramway (for some fantastic views).

I wasn't sure which Grand Canyon to do and opted for the Indian Adventure One - you fly from Boulder City out to the rim of the Canyon passing Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam on the way. You land at the rim and are then transported by bus to 2 viewing points - Eagle point and Guano Point. You can go at your own speed providing you are back in time for your flight back to BC. The views are spectacular and you can get some amazing photos. The skywalk is an experience - and not as scary as I thought it might be! You cannot take bags/ cameras etc onto the skywalk though - but there are photographers there if you want an official photo of you on it. Because we went early morning we were the first ones at the skywalk so had it all to ourselves for a while (downside was that not all of the Indian experience was open that early).

Whatever you do I am sure you will have a fab time - enjoy!!

I am doing this tour on 15/10/12. When should Alcatraz be booked for? The first or second day. Thanks. Adele

Hi Sookie

I did this trip in 2010 and like the others I can confirm you will have an amazing time. My whole group did all the excursions (except the SF helicopter because of bad weather) and they are all great value. I would suggest the Grand Canyon 3 in 1 trip - you have to get up at about 4am but you will be back in Vegas by lunch time and have plenty of time to spend the rest of the day soaking up the wacky atmosphere of the place - it's totally nuts!

Another tip for this trip is definitely to pack layers - it is very windy and chilling in SF and at the top of the mountain in Palm Springs but can be over 35 degrees in the desert (sun screen is a must).

I'd suggest the second day in SF for Alcatraz and like the others would recommend you book on line in advance (it's timed tickets and you need to be a the dock at least half an hour before your departure time). As a last resort, the concierge at the hotel will be happy to try and book a ticket for you to collect at the dock but you are taking a risk on late availability.

Have a super time!

Mandy

;) Hi Sue, I too am going on this trip in April. I am going on the 15th and hope to meet up with someone at the airport before we set off. I have been on a few JW hols and they are always very good. Just at the moment I am puzzling over the variety of Grand Canyon excursions.

Hi Ruth,

This is my first JY holiday, always wanted to do West Coast of America so can't wait for April! I'm travelling from Newcastle and staying in the Comfort Hotel on Sunday night. I'm assuming we'll need to be at the airport around 8.30am on the Monday. Re. excursions, I've never been in a helicopter before so decided to do the 3-in-1 Grand Canyon trip - also liked the idea of the boat ride down the Colorado river! I decided not do book the JY SFran bay trip but going to book Alkatraz myself for the 17th at 1pm via their website - you can only book 90 days in advance I think. Re. Las Vegas, you can't pre-book it now via JY. However, I understand the tour manager will have tickets available for us to purchase during the holiday - Ben was going to check out which show had been booked by the tour manager. I believe it used to be the Rat Pack but that may have changed this year. Some people on this site have commented that the hotel may be able to get tickets for a show too. I'm just going to wait until I get there and see what's available. Looking forward to meeting everyone at the airport, it all sounds so exciting! Sue

Hi I did this tour two years ago and loved it! All the excursions were great, it didn't bother me one bit that Alcatraz wasn't included as I did the Bay tour and we went close to the island and got a good commentary on it. Some of the tour booked Alcatraz separately for the free afternoon and enjoyed it. I went for a wander around the city with four other JY folks; we went on a cable car, walked around Chinatown and Little Italy and really enjoyed it. Had a nice meal and a few drinks - better than wandering around a former prison!!

Regarding the Grand Canyon, I also did the 3 in 1 tour and if it's your first time seeing it, I recommend you do this one as it gives you the best perspective. The helicopter flights were short, but exhilarating. The boat trip was also short, but interesting as it gave a very different perspective. After the bus tour, we had plenty of time to stand at the South Rim and take photos. I could have done the Skywalk as well, as I had the time but didn't bother, as I got very good photos without the extra expense! Hope this helps and have a great hol.

Hi Rosina,

I am very sorry, I was having a moment! I was looking at the Travelsphere brochure yesterday, not Just You!

You are quite right, they are included excursions, if you wait till your on holiday to book them you are guaranteed a space so it would be fine,

I hope this helps this time!

Hi Ben, Is there any chance that you could let me know the luggage allowance for this holiday (hold and hand). I need to buy some new luggage so it would be good to know a bit sooner than when I receive the final documents. To anyone else reading this, I was going to book Alcatraz myself via their website but all their online purchasing guidelines/watch-outs put me off! I've decided to book the JY SF Bay Cruise instead and just take my chances with Alcatraz when I get to SF - if I can't get on the island it won't spoil my holiday. So now I'm booked for Grand Canyon 3-in-1, Universal Studios and SanFrancisco Bay Cruise - anything else offered by the Tour Manager during the holiday will add to the thrill of it all! I would love to have the chance of eating at the 'Waterfront' restaurant in SF, as I've always understood (from American colleagues) that it was the place to go - mind you, that was in the 1970s, things might have changed a lot since then 🙂 - just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else has the same idea! Sue
