Ben,

My passport expires in march next year so when I do route 66 trip in october it will only have 5 months to run.

Do you need 3 months or 6 months on your passport to travel to the US, this website says 90 days however others i've looked at say 6 month.

Can you confirm which is correct.

In the customer support section (essential information) :-

Passports

🅱"You must have an e-passport or machine readable passport to travel to the US, with a digital photo of the passport holders face on the data page of the passport. It is essential for British Citizens to possess a full ten year passport, valid for at least 90 days beyond the return date for all holidays to America. If you are visiting the Caribbean, then your passport needs to be valid for six months beyond your return date. If you do not have a passport, you should enquire at your local main Post Office or nearest Passport Office at least three months before departure."

My problem is i'm doing austrian lakes with you in August so it only gives me 7 weeks between holidays to renew my passport before the route 66 trip.

Hi Mick,

I would hope that our information contained in the customer section was accurate and I'm sure it is, however it is best to check with the Post Office directly or ring your local passport office to clarify.

I am going away on Sept 15th personally and I have had to renew mine, I did the application through the Post Office last Saturday and they informed me that it should be back to me within 3 weeks, so it may be worth looking at renewing your passport prior to your trip in August, but please check with your local passport office asap.

Kindest,

Ben

Hi Ben,

Only 4 weeks to Austrian Lakes bit risky to renew now (have 7 weeks between that trip and america). Have actually got the form ready for post office as if i renew will do the day i get back from austria.

Since I asked your question I've found the 90 day rule is correct according to the home office site (as long as travelling on the visa waiver), trying to find the info on American sites to confirm but looks like it'll be ok.

thanks

If I was you I would not take any chances. I would go straight to your nearest passport office wherever that maybe and get a new one straight away. I know that you have to pay for the service, but what is best. Wait and possibly lose your holiday to the Grand ole US of A. Also what would happen to all the money you have paid if you cannot go to USA. I doubt if it would be refunded by JY or the insurance company. Don't forget also that you need an ESTA for the States.

Best wishes

Peter

Peter,

I've now checked with both the US Embassy and the Foreign Office websites and they confirm countries in the Visa Waiver agreement are ok and don't need 6 month.

Yes I already have a ESTA from previous US trips and still within the 2 years, updated it this morning with this trip details with no problem.

Hi Mick,

Glad you got to the bottom of it, sorry I couldn't be more help but that is something that needs to be advised officially, you'd be upset with me if I got it wrong!

Have a great time,

all the best,

Ben

If you change yourr mind and do decide to renew your passport do not forget that you would then need a new ESTA as this is linked to your passport number.

If you are able to get to the passport office, for example, in London you can get the passport in a day for a higher fee. You make an appointment and they see you at the allocated time and then the passport is ready in 4 hours. I did this for my boss who travels a lot.
