Hello

I wondered if Olly or anyone who has been could advise on clothing for Egypt in terms of what is considered acceptable for ladies to wear please. I am wondering whether dresses above the knee would be an issue (not mini dresses just regular summer dresses) and also bare shoulders. I was thinking of taking some kind of cover up like a cardigan, shawl, jacket.

Any advice you could give please would be great.

I noticed it is warmish in Cairo at the moment - around 22oC and hotter in Luxor - around 26oC. I will be travelling on 1st March (if the trip is not cancelled).

Many thanks, vina

Hi Vina

Egyptians have quite a wide range of views on this subject. Some are very modern and wouldn't bat an eyelid while others are more traditional and might be offended.

My advice would be to go for light dresses that cover the knee and, as you suggest, have a cardigan or similar handy to cover your shoulders. I would certainly cover up knees and shoulders if you are visiting any mosques, though I don't think it matters so much when you are visiting the ancient Egyptian sites.

Other Community users might have some opinions too.

Kind regards,

Olly, your editor

I have visited Egypt. I would say modesty is the thing. No string strap tops with very low necklines, short skirts, short shorts. Sure you can wear, them but you may not like the looks or comments you get. Always cover up at Islamic sites
