Has anyone booked Walking in the Swiss Alps?  How long are daily hikes and are hiking boots needed or can you get away with runners?

Hi Amorris52,

Here's the breakdown of how long the hikes are:

Day 2 – 12km

Day 3 – 10 km

Day 5 - 12km

We do advise boots with ankle support as there will be areas with high gradients and uneven ground.

Many thanks,

Vickie

I see your reply to the question re hikes.  I think it would be helpful to know gradient heights etc, terrain and generally more details of walks. If JY are going to do more walking holidays this information is essential. I have been one walking holiday with JY (in Yorkshire) and although within my capacity it was not so for others as they didnt expect some of the gradients.  I am reluctant to book a walking holiday with JY until more walk details are supplied.  I can take gradients, however dont have a head for heights, sheer drops etc so I need to know about all this in advance.  With all due respect a person in the JY  office wont know all these details,so they should be clearly stated in brochure.

HI Jintzky,

We've asked our supplier for more details on the gradients, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Vickie

One of the best holidays I have been on. Fabulous scenery, lovely hotel, great tour manager and crowd of fellow travellers. Highly recommended, you will need proper walking boots.

As I said this would be useful on ALL walking holidays and more easily available.  This is what holds me back from booking a JY walking holiday....

Hi Jintzky,

I've just heard back! Here are the details you need.

Also, our holiday organisers are going to look at including gradient details for all tours in future - thank you for raising this with us.

Walk 1 - Walk along the Lütschine with a lunch stop at the Schynige Platte - This 10 km and 2 ½ hours hike is taken on the historical path with some parts of old stone walls and part of a pilgrim trail

Walk 2 – Murren - Lauterbrunnen(800m) to Trümmelbachfalls and Stechelberg Station Schilthorn cable care(862m) we hike most time on the tarmac road, which is the official hiking trail +62m altitude difference. The hike from Gimmelwald (1367m) to Mürren (1640m) would be over a tarmac road with +275 altitude differences.

Walk 3 – Männlichen - Kleine Scheidegg- = 5km/ - 170m / 1.15h hike on stony but easy trail / with view to the famous Eiger north face, Mönch and Jungfrau and down to Grindelwald. Grindelwald (1040m) up by cable car to the top of First (2160m) takes about 40 minutes. The hike downwards Grindelwald brings us to Schreckfeld (1954m) -210 descend on a 4x4 wheel trail and more down with a nice view to Grindelwald and the mountains Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn and Eiger to Bort (1561m) – 600m decent from the top of First.

Many thanks,

Vickie

Thank you for these details - going by this I can see this is too ambitious for me.  You can see how useful this is? It would have spoiled my holiday if I had pushed myself too far....I have noticed that another company (who is now doing single holidays for the first time!) is now doing walking holidays and they have - length of walk/gradient/difficulty i.e. easy, medium, difficult.  How long the walk takes is irrelevant - we need more details.  Thank you and I look forward to seeing these details in brochure/website.
