Hi, I am travelling to Vietnam and Cambodia next February. First time with Just you so looking for any suggestions from seasoned travellers. Need to buy a new suitcase any suggestions? Hard or soft? Size etc.

CvIt comes down to personal choice, but do bear in mind luggage gets tossed around by airline baggage handlers, and will be taken on off of  coaches during the tour, so something lightweight and reasonably strong is needed. Also, as you will be wheeling your luggage around airports, a case that rolls easily is a must. I’m also on this tour. See you In February

Hi Gill,

Slightly "how long is a piece of string" as we all have different needs.

Personally I prefer a hard case. Some people seem to try & keep their luggage pristine - difficult with the way luggage is handled - but the first thing I do is put several strips of bright gaffer tape over the case. I have used hard & soft but gaffer tape and soft cases don't go together! That and a few stickers makes the case stand out and I can usually spot mine from way off. Also with so many cases looking the same it minimises the risk of someone else picking up yours by mistake.

As regards size then:-

  • I'll admit to being XL so need proportionately more space for the same items as someone who is (say) M,

  • for Vietnam & Cambodia you will have internal flights in Vietnam so you need to bear in mind the weight allowance on those flights

  • How much do you take with you? I use as much travel clothing as possible so do laundry on the go

  • Vietnam & Cambodia will be warm so fairly lightweight clothing will be the order of the day but bear in mind the case may be needed for other trips to colder climes

  • I always make sure there is space in the case. I often travel in colder UK months to warmer climes. I could have a top coat/fleece etc for use when I return. So often I see people with full cases and lugging coats as they move from place to place whilst mine is in the case.

Sadly there is no "one fits all" scenario but on the positive side then whatever case you choose you will enjoy Vietnam & Cambodia.

Hi

After significant damage to soft body suitcases I invested in the lightest hard body case I could find. Found one online which is a 28" case with an integrated lock. It is easy to manoeuvre and although it has some scratches it is coping well with airport baggage handlers!

Hi,

I have enough items of luggage to open a shop as airports/airlines have ruined nearly every case I've had (I do travel a lot!) - Heathrow is the worse. Having seen a JY tour manager with an Eastpak case, I now have about 4 of them in different sizes. Not cheap, but have a look on Amazon. They are soft and open out sideways, so to speak. Packing cubes fit into them really well. They are strong canvas. You can always put a coloured strap around them for easy identification - the time I didn't do this, I nearly opened somebody else's case which was identical!

Good luck, and enjoy Vietnam and Cambodia - fabulous countries.

Cheers,

Hils

Thanks Sarah for your thoughts and see you in February. I am travelling down from Scotland the night before and staying in the yotel in Heathrow.

Likewise, looking forward to the trip. I have my visa for Cambodia, very easy to obtain on line. I do prefer not to have my passport out of my hands.

Still annoyed that I have been penalised for early booking, and so not qualified for the free visa offer. Please JY reconsider your future policies to include all pre booked travellers in future offers as your competitors do.

Hi

A friend and I are visiting Cambodia and Vietnam with Travelsphere in September. It would be great if you could write a review of this holiday when you return.

Hi Sara, I am staying at the Hilton Express T4 the night before but won’t get there until later as meeting up with my niece and nephew in London for food but will be around if anyone wants to meet up.

I agree with Sarah. Just You should not penalise those who book trips way in advance - they are getting to keep the deposits for longer so should give the same offers to them as well.

Question to all, are any of you taking Vietnam currency or just US$? I have also been told about a travel cash card but don’t know anything about it?

Vickie, can you please ask my rep Bronwyn ( my trip is to Vietnam/ Cambodia leaving 15th Feb) if she can recommend the best type of suitcase as there is a lot of transfers and it would be nice if she has any recommendations. Thanks
