Hi. My first time of travelling alone but really wanted to see Grand Canyon, the Pacific route and other stuff so husband said - do it and much to my amazement I did 🙂. Just realised how close it is and now trying to judge what I need to take and how. Gather it can be cold Yosemite/Grand Canyon so not all tee shirts and shorts!!! Exciting and scary.

Hi Angjd, I was booked on the 'Escape from the Rock cruise' but like you think I'd prefer to actually visit Alcatraz itself so have cancelled the cruise, so  we could go to Alcatraz together?  Also, others might like to join to!

I've spoken to JustYou who have advised that it needs to be booked in advance as it gets busy and could be impossible to organise once we're over there.

https://www.alcatrazcruises.com/tour-options#/navigate-ticket-behind-tour  - there are different options though personally I think I'll be restricted to the 2.5 hour 'Day Tour' because of the SF Evening Tour that leaves at 6.30pm, which I'm joining.  You might prefer to do a longer 4.5 hour tour though!

Have a look at the website and see what you think.  JY confirmed the date to go is 15th October and perhaps to make it late morning or early afternoon as there's also stuff going on in the morning I think (not sure what).

If you're happy to go for the Day Tour let me know ...... maybe 1100 booking, or later?  If anyone else would like to go too please add comments so we can hopefully book the same slot!

See you soon :-)

Hey, I to wouldn't mind visiting Alcatraz, 4.5 hour is more intensive i am told by my friends who have been and is the most complete experience but like you i am booked on that night time in san fran so may be restricted to 2.5, unless you do early bird?

Good Morning Janet balls,

I can tell you that 36 travellers are booked onto this trip. 11 are males and 25 are female.

The age ranges between late 30s - early 80s.

Kind Regards,

Amy

Hi Susanna,

I wouldn't worry - there are many people in their late 70s and older who do long haul tours with JY!  There's always a bit of free time to have a snooze if needed...I'm 47 and always come back tired from JY tours!!  But it's worth it...

Cheers,

Bob

Hi Phil, think you're talking about the 'Behind the scenes' tour but unfortunately this doesn't start until 4.20pm so there's no way we could do that, bit of a shame.  Do you think 1100 is OK ?  Otherwise, we'd need to check with JY as to what's going on earlier on the morning - they recommended late morning/early afternoon. Hopefully other people will join us too 🙂

Thank you v. Much - looking forward to it.  Where is the best place to look to get previous travellers tips, particularly for long haul as not done this before

Have booked via the Alcatraz website for their tour with a 9.30 crossing on the free day.

Ill let you know:). I'm going on the 4th - 68 now and not done anything like this and am definitely not a seasoned traveller.  Grand Canyon is my thing and seeing the Pacific - just realised need to get going on my "bucket list" 🙂

Good Morning Janet balls,

If you look at the 'Reviews' and 'Share your Travel Tips' sections on our JY Community, then you will be able to see previous travellers tips.

However, since you would like specific details about long haul, then you should probably contact one of our friendly holiday advisors via telephone or email.

I hope that this helps.

Kindest Regards,

Amy

I double-checked with JY re their recommendation to book the Alcatraz tour late morning/early afternoon, which turned out to be a little misleading!  As Golf10 has already booked the tour for the 9.30 start, I've done the same!  See you there!

If the 9.30 tour takes 2.5 hours as suggested this would still leave time to further explore San Francisco - Maybe take a Cable Car.

I was in San Fran earlier this year 4 day stay. Alcatraz trip approx 33 dollars book online b4 you go. Print out ticket. Need to be at pier half hour b4 your timed ticket, as they willfill the ferry with untimed ticket holders b4 it leaves.

You can leave Alcatraz at any time, the tour has headphones and you can go at your own pace. To avoid climb on arrival and get good photos I'd say take the train style transport on offer both ways. The tour guide gives you information and it can offer priority on boarding the ferry back!

Re Sausalito, remember to sing Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, that's where it was written.!

Yes definitely have a ride on a cable car, really looking forward to that.  There's so much else to do too in a few hours!
