Whilst I am waiting for further news on the Dubrovnik possible change of hotel, I am considering this holiday as an alternative for early May.  I would really appreciate some advice from past travellers on several issues.

For those who don't know, I use a walking stick, more for stability than anything else,am fine on the flat and inclines, and actually going up steps, but a lot slower coming down them.  I suffer from slight vertigo and coming down steps is a bit of an issue without a handrail.  That's why I always research like mad with any trip that I am considering.

I know that JY have put  about " rough grounds etc" on the overview for this trip, but it was the same for the Dubrovnik trip last year, and the only thing I couldn't or wouldn't do was the steps up to the lift in Dubrovnik.  Other than that I think I managed very well, but I hate keeping people waiting and am very conscious of it.  :s

The hotel.

I see that there are a few steps within the grounds of the hotel, but I don't think that I would have a major issue with them, but would welcome any thoughts.  As far as the accomodation is concerned, I understand that the rooms are in blocks.  Are there lifts within these blocks?

The trips.

Are there any of the trips that are especially difficult because of lots of steps etc?

Thanks in advance

Hi Elaine,

I did this a couple of years ago and this is my review.

I think Matera would be the town most likely to give you problems.  I can remember going from the coach to the town where the "steps" were steep uneven stones.  I do not remember a handrail, but seem to recall holding onto the uneven stones which made the wall for support.  It was dry but if it had been wet it would have been lethal.

I have had a quick look through my photos and can't see anywhere else that would be a problem.  I had a ground floor room at the hotel.

Hi Elaine,

I did this tour at the beginning of  October this year and posted a review. One lady in the group used a walking stick  but managed to do most of the excursions,  although I'm not sure if she made it down to the caves in Matera. As has been said, the steps down to massi houses are very steep and uneven, with no handrails  although for most of the way, it was possible to hold onto the surrounding wall. Going down seemed worse than coming up. Our local guide was very patient,  and took us at a steady pace. I don't think I would have attempted  the in the wet.

In Ostuni and Alberbello there are steep cobbled streets  leading from the main squares, but in both we had free time, so you could  pace yourself.

The hotel  does  have lifts in  the blocks, also in the main building to access the second floor dining room.

Hope this helps. Any other questions, please ask
