Hi Kerry and anyone who has done the Athens, Olympia and Corinth tour...

I'm hoping you can help me please?!  At the moment I'm torn between two tours for next year - Russia and the Athens tour.  Part of me thinks that I should do the Russia tour in case the international situation changes over the next while and part of me thinks I should do the Athens tour in case it disappears - the number of departures for next year has just been reduced from five to three!  So to help me make up my mind, I'd really appreciate it if anyone who has done the Athens tour could tell me some more about it - there are only a couple of reviews and they've tended to focus more on the Hotel Stanley (which I know has now been replaced by the Titania Hotel)!

So could you please tell me what the tour was like?  Was there a lot of beautiful scenery and some stunning sunsets?  What was the food like?  Were all the excursions worth doing?  Any other info that might be helpful?  If anyone has been in September, was it very hot?!  I'm really encouraged that Kerry put this tour as her favourite JY tour to date but I'd love to know more!

Best wishes,

Bob

Hi all,

I'm putting up this post to bring it to the top of the list again!  I do hope Kerry or someone will be able to help me out - please?!

Best wishes,

Bob

Hi Bob. Well, I did the Athens tour last October and thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't even mind the good old Hotel Stanley as much as some of the others seemed to. However, the hotels did get increasingly good as we moved around, and there were a couple of real gems along the way. The one in Olympia was good but sadly we only spent one night there. The one in Nafpaktos was even better and the whole visit to that town was great.

I enjoyed the day sailing from Athens to the three different islands. A great atmosphere on the boat with a brilliant buffet style meal and live music. Another meal on one of the islands was also great - sardines featured highly, and attracted what seemed to be all the cats of the island! A pod of dolphins accompanied us for part of our trip, which was unexpected and really good.

Overall, the food was fine, but I'm not very interested in food generally so I wouldn't remember much about it. The ancient historical sites were all amazing, of course. The little train ride was interesting and the town at the top was good for a walk around and lunch. One of the highlights for me was the cookery lesson which took place in a lovely place high up in the hills, where the weather was much cooler. We had a log fire and a really lovely welcome with great, traditional food (even I remember that!) The last night, in a taverna in old Athens, was a lovely end to the trip, wandering the little streets and all the local souvenir shops, etc., plus a nice atmosphere for the meal.

We did a fair few kilometres - we actually had a competition on the last leg back to Athens to see who could get closest to the distance clocked by our driver (I can't remember, so no clues from me!)

Weather wise, it was warm, but not unbearable. But it was October, not September.

Hi Toni,

Many thanks for your comments, they are really helpful!  I'm strongly thinking of booking this tour now, so any other comments would also be very much appreciated.

All the best,

Bob

Hi Toni, (and thanks Bob for asking the question).

Thanks for the information. I'd not had this tour on my wish list but from what you say it seems interesting and I've never been to Greece + the date in September looks as if it might work for me.

Regards

Katy

Hi Katy, which date in Sept were you thinking of?  I'm thinking 4 Sept as I'll be away again in November.  As always I'll be a bit anxious about the level of bookings until my chosen date gets the green light!

All the best,

Bob

Hi Bob, if I book, then 4th September would be when I book too (we may meet again!).  Just seems too far away to commit to this yet.  But it does look an interesting trip, covering a lot and somewhere I've not been.  I think you're doing the Chile trip in November, I'm interested in that too (and Easter Island) - but want to wait until there are some reviews/feedback.

Regards, Katy

Hi Katy,

It would be nice to cross paths again!  I may well book this in the coming weeks.  I'm still hoping Kerry will comment on the Athens tour as she said it was her favourite JY tour and I'd love to know more!  Yes I'm doing the Chile tour but I think RayT is doing it in March and I know someone else through FB who is also doing the March tour so hopefully I'll get some feedback on it before I go.

All the best,

Bob

Hello Bob

I have not done the JY tour, but I did visit Athens and other parts of Greece in my far-off backpacking days. The first time was in the spring, when I did Athens, Corinth, Delphi etc (the "milk run", as my Greek friends called it) and really enjoyed the trip: the weather was warm and sunny, with  all the spring flowers out.

I went through Athens a few years later in September on the way back from Istanbul, and found Athens by comparison to be hot, dusty and suffering from traffic pollution. I may just have been unlucky but, if I were to go to Athens again (unlikely, I much prefer Istanbul), then it would be in the spring. I would like to visit Delphi again, though, especially at sunrise or sunset when the rest of the tourists are absent.

Whenever you decide to go, don't miss the excursion from Athens to Cape Sounion to see the sunset.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your comments!  I heard from a friend last night who has just returned from the Athens tour and he really enjoyed it, so it's looking ever more likely that I will book it.

All the best,

Bob

Hello Bob,

Have just seen your mention of Chile - I am thinking of booking it for next November, but haven't yet as last time I queried it, no one had booked the main tour, so I thought it was a bit too early to book. I must look at it again soon though as the new brochure may encourage a rush!  I believe the Easter Island bit has been fully booked though for that date.  I am off on Historic America this Sunday, and have Cyprus booked for Christmas, and the Irrawaddy cruise booked for February.

Enough to be going on with.

You have been after info on Greece; I gave you my impressions some time ago, and certainly recommend it and all the excursions. Food was good throughout, and it is a relatively relaxed tour compared to,say, Mexico.  Go for it!

Regards,

RayT

Hi Ray, many thanks for your comments - after a lot of searching I finally found your post again and it was very helpful.  At that stage, I was only half thinking of doing the Athens tour but now I am seriously contemplating it.   Happy travelling!  I know five others who have booked the Chile tour with Easter Island extension, so we should be a very happy group!  Perhaps I'll see you there if you decide to book the main tour.

Best wishes,

Bob

Hi Bob,

There are still some places left on the main tour in Nov. '17, so will deal with it on my return from USA.

I look forward to sharing a beer with you again. Any further queries on Greece, you know where I am.

Regards,

Ray
