Hello everyone:cool:

has anybody actually gone up to the top of the crown in the Statue of Liberty, I understand there are 162 narrow steps (no lift). Due to health issues I won't be attempting this at all. A lady I am travelling with is undecided, so my question is.

What is the climb of 162 steps really like? It's one thing to read and another to do.

Is the view worth it?

Thanks for any information.

Hi Cindy,

I went to the top about 5/6 years ago, maybe longer. There are actually around 354 steps and its quite a strenuous journey, but you only do it once. I think there are some areas along the way where you can stop and take a breath for a few moments. When you get to the crown its only a small space, with small windows.

If you dont feel like doing the climb, perhaps cheat and get someone else on the trip to take your camera up and snap some photos for you.

Hi Cindy,

Like Kezzer I have been up inside the Statue of Liberty although it was a long time ago. I think you even reach the inside of the torch.

The boat ride to the statue is great if it sis on a fine sunny day - Lots of photographic shots of New York and Statton Island ( Maybe spelt that wrong) on the way there and back.

Hi Cindy,

I did the climb to the crown in 2009 and it's quite strenuous (a spiral staircase where the turns get tighter as you near the top). Basically the statue was never designed for people to access the crown so the climb isn't easy, but worth it to say you've actually done it.

You can't have access to the torch I'm afraid; I understand that there is an access but for maintenance purposes only - it's not open to the general public.

If you or your travelling companion decide to do it then I would recommend that you buy tickets in advance. Room is extremely limited (about 12 persons only - including a couple of Rangers who will be there) so only a limited number of people are allowed access each day.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Hello All,

We went on the Staten Island ferry to look at the Lady properly, the queues at Battery Park were horrendous. Daughter number 1 finally went to the Lady in January- huge fog bank ruled out most of Manhattan when she got there :P

Hi Cindy,

To be honest, I cant remember much about the views as it was pretty misty when I went - I did try to post in my last message a picture of the crown for you to see how small it is when you get to the top but I dont think it worked. I do remember that one of the ladies I was with was extremely disappointed that there wasn't a restaurant at the top lol Andy on the way down we met a very nice old gentleman who had worked at the Statue and was now retired, who told us lots of fasinating tales about life looking after the lady.

That said, I think no matter if you walk up her or not, she will still take your breath away.

I did an extensive tour of New York way back in 1997, did the Statue, climbed it, the views were amazing, it was a crystal clear day. Also did a helicopter flight over NY, the views from the statue were just as good as this! climbed all the usual towers, trump, chrysler, empire state, the twin towers, which in my opinion were the best views of all of them. Ellis Island is interesting, as is staten Island and Coney island, New York really is 24 hours, so much to do. Particulary liked Greenwich Village and Soho, and touring round Harlem and the Bowery, real history there still alive.

Hello Cindy,

Best thing about the Staten Island ferry is that it is free

If you have seen the old film Working Girl, it played an important part in that. Sarah was not happy as she had already been to Nashville at -15 degrees and had to buy extra clothing. They had also closed most things early due to the adverse weather.
