I am normally a very confident out-going person, who does not have any difficulty speaking to strangers. However, I am just contemplating taking my first ever singles holiday. I am toying with the idea of going to the Isle of Man later on this year. It would be brilliant if other members could tell me about their first experiences when travelling on their own. Am I over being over-sensitive about taking this step? Has anyone out there already been on the Isle of Man trip? What were your impressions?

Well you are asking the already converted, we all took the first step and keep coming back which proves its something we don't regret.

I actually had a weekend in the Isle of Man for the fist time last year and its a lovely place, was independant not the JY trip which i reckon will be good.

This time last year my thoughts were just like yours. But I took the bull by the horns and booked a trip to Thailand for my first solo outing. My view was - even if I didn't enjoy the experience I could enjoy the country I'd wanted to visit. But from the minute I met a fellow traveller in Manchester airport I enjoyed every single minute of my holiday. Everything was taken care of by JY down to the smallest detail without it feeling like a school outing. !! I met some lovely people whom I'm still in contact with. I have planned another JY holiday to Peru . Go for it you'll enjoy the experience.

Hi I am also new to travelling on my own and booked my first trip yesterday. I have chosen to go walking in Yorkshire. Can anyone tell me if they have been on this trip before and was it as good as it sounds?

My first trip was to Jordan, Sinai and the Pyramids in Egypt September 2010. Sadly JY do not do this tour anymore. It was great and the friendliness of all the group was amazing. Had a bet with one of the gents to see who could get the most puddings on our plates- he usually won.

I ticked off Petra and the pyramids at Giza from my bucket list. Saw so much extra that I have many fond memories- coming out of the Siq and looking up at the Treasury- listening to a load of Americans who had just missed the sun crossing the front of the Treasury and wondering what was so spectacular! First camel ride, first mosque, bent pyramid, steps pyramid, now done Memphis Egypt and Tennessee.

Have since done Lake Garda, Steam trains of the Highlands and Alpine Europe- so many ticks on my bucket list 🙂 This year I have booked Route 61 in November and looking at the Isle of Man or Santorini- too many decisions to make!

Hi there

I can only echo RLJs comments. Like you, I'm quite independent and outgoing, I enjoy company when on holiday, especially eating out, but I don't like being herded around. I'm off on my 3rd JY holiday (to Thailand) in just a week and can't wait. In short, on many trips, you can be as independent or in a group as you wish. I found that on my previous trips to Cilento Coast and Tuscany, my JY companions were such good company that I was very happy to go with the flow. If you're still concerned, I recommend booking a trip where you can easily "escape" the group should you wish. I.e. Don't book somewhere with a very remote base. Cilento base was very close to a small village, walkable or bus to the nearest town, Tuscany base is on the edge of a town and you can walk in the pine forest or hire a bike. Check out the details, Go for it and enjoy!
