Hello!

I've been reading your messages about the Nov Peru trip with great interest as I am also booked on it but not doing the Amazon add on. This is my first solo holiday abroad and getting very excited! I will be flying from Heathrow even though I'm coming from Devon. Getting a bus straight to the airport is so easy!!

I have also received the extra information-seems strange that not everyone has had it.

Not sure whether I'll do the Museum trip. More info would be good.

Just been looking at meal prices-seems pretty cheap.

My only question [ for now!! ] is will a European adaptor work over there?

Hope this post gets to the right place cause it all looked a bit confusing!!!

Also hope you three dont mind me joining in!!!!

Cathy

I am delighted you are joining in Cathy and look forward to meeting you. One question. Where did you see meal price info? Re the adaptor there are two very slightly different round pin adapters I think. I am struggling to find out which works and will renew my efforts shortly. I also know little about the Museum trip. I did a little research. It looked interesting but understand we can decide when we get there.

Great to hear from you, Steve.

Hi Everybody

Thanks for the welcome!! It is starting to feel a bit real now!

Steve, I found food cost info on www.numbeo.com. It came up when I googled cost of living. I think its up to date. Think I'll decide about the museum when I'm there-will probably depend on the weather!!!

Keith, I think you've got the answer to the adaptor problem by having a worldwide one. I was totally confused by the various pin shapes so will check them out on Amazon. How did we cope before amazon came along?!! Have seen the photo's thanks-looks fantastic!!

Mima, looking forward to meeting you at the airport! I dont plan to take malaria tablets as I've heard they can give you quite a rough time. Hope the altitude sickness isn't too bad!! I'm finding out about vaccinations on Friday. The info from JY seemed to think it was best to take Peru currency but didnt give any idea of how much.

Looking forward to meeting you all

Cathy

Hi Cathy, you shouldn't need too many jabs if you are not doing the Amazon add on and wont need malaria. I am fairly well jabbed up but I am taking malerone malaria tabs for the amazon, two days before then daily until a week after but you wont need them for the main tour only. If anyone else is doing the Amazon add on the best deal for malerone is either Asda or Tesco pharmacy. Don't get a Drs prescription, all you need is to fill in a form and quick chat with the pharmacist. Cost about £35 There are cheaper brands available but the side effects can be nausea, the runs, and thrush but i have never had probs with malerone.

My travel nurse also recommended the rabies jab for the Amazon which is the first three injections of the course of five which they give you if bitten. £120 if paying but I didn't have to so I thought why not

Only seven weeks to go this Tuesday and really looking forward to it

Mima/All, the 'extra' info that arrived just before I came away did not, as far as I remember, give much idea as to how much currency to bring. Its pretty clear that one should take $US and exchange locally, and perhaps top up with an ATM, but what we need before souvenirs.....no idea. Hopefully someone....anyone know anyone who has been there recently?....will step forward.

On the health front there is an interesting read here.

http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/yellowbook/2014/chapter-4-select-destinations/peru-cuzco-machu-picchu

It is from the USA but I think American humans react like British ones. When I lived in the US and travelled extensively I always found it useful. I notice it says:

"There is no malaria risk for travelers visiting only Lima and vicinity, coastal areas south of Lima, or the popular highland tourist areas (Cuzco, Machu Picchu, and Lake Titicaca). The malaria-endemic areas for most tourists are the neotropical rainforests of the Amazon, with 2 major destinations (see Map 3-38). "

I am not going to the Amazon so my interest stops after the 11 day trip.

I asked a friend here in Austria, a Dr with qualifications in high altitude medecine, about our abruptish arrival at a reasonably high altitude. Most of the advice (get there slowly, sleep at a lower altitude) we cant comply with because of the way JustYou has constructed the trip, the geography, and we only have 11 days. What we can do is drink plenty but keep off the booze. Having said that provided we have moderate exercise before we go we should be fine bar a headache perhaps. Thats my understanding anyway....no gaurantees.

My main concern is tummy bugs. Usual boring precautions for that.

I look forward to meeting you all.

Hello!

Have spoken to my travel nurse and she is going to stab me with Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Tetanus-ouch!!. Will bring some lovely stinky deet spray and plug-in for the night.

Have looked up worldwide adaptors on Amazon and passed the info on to my son as a birthday pressie hint!!!

Keith, I'm glad I'm not the only one counting the days-feel like a kiddie waiting for Christmas!!

Steve, I,too, was a bit concerned about flying straight to high altitude but hopefully it wont be too bad.

Have been chatting to someone who is doing the October Peru trip so hopefully she will be able to answer the 'money' questions when she gets back.

Hi everybody, looking forward to seeing you all in a couple of days. If you put a Justyou luggage label on your hand luggage we can spot eachother at the gate waiting area.
