I am going on my first JY holiday to Andalucia in August which includes an optional trip to Gibraltar. I have been reading reviews and there have been mixed reports about this trip with some community members saying it wasn't worth going on. Can anyone who has been on this holiday and went on the Gibraltar trip let me know a bit more about it to help me decide whether I want to go. Thanks.

I did the holiday in 2010 and it was one of my favorite excurrsions (thought they were all good on that holiday). Still I like the British influence and the history, visited the cemetery that some from Trafalger were buried. Loved the Apes when we went up the rock, great fun.

However it did split opinions on our trip although thoought more gave it thumbs up rather than thumbs down.

Hi I agree with Mick, I also did this tour in 2010 and greatly enjoyed it - Gibraltar is unique and very interesting, a little colonial outpost. The tour was not extensive but good nonetheless. Great fun to see the apes and there was free time to do (duty free) shopping as well and have a general wander round the town centre.

I on the other hand found the Alhambra disappointing! Everyone else on the tour raved about it. For me, it was just an empty building with some interesting tiles and nice gardens but nothing spectacular!

All the best,

Bob

I too have done this holiday in September 2010 and did like the visit to Gibraltar. The caves were interesting and so were the apes. You never know if and when you will ever get a chance to go back so my thinking is to go on all trips on offer. Not everyone on the holiday took up the offer as it was an optional trip, but I personally enjoyed the experience.

I've just come back from this trip. I though the Gibralter trip was well worth doing. The history of the Rock was very interesting. Discovered lots of things I had never heard about it before.

Bob,

Strangely our trip was much the same with many raving about Alhambra but just didn't do it for me.

Hi Mick and Bob

I was disappointed with the Alhambra also. After all the hype about it

it was quite a let down.

Thanks for all your feedback. Gibraltar sounds like it would definitely be a worthwhile trip. I wonder why some of the people on the tours didn't like it. Must be just a matter of taste.

Bob/Mick, it's interesting that neither of you enjoyed Alhambra. I've seen it crop up quite a few times on those '50 things to see before you die' lists so would expect it to be quite spectacular.

Jaya, I totally agree with your attitude of seeing/experiencing as much as possible while you have the chance so I might as well do all the excursions as I'll probably not get the chance to again 🙂

Hi again Ruth, I too had read about it and seen some photos on those "things to do before you die" books/websites and so my expectations were very high! I suppose it is so celebrated as it is the most complete example of Moorish architecture in existence. But if it had been furnished, or more than just a well preserved shell of a building, I think I would have thought a lot more of the Alhambra. The gardens are very nice and there are good views over the valley. So if you haven't been before I would still recommend that you see it, just to tick it off the list. Perhaps you will be one of the ones who rave about it!

All the best,

Bob
