Hi, does anyone have a recommendation on what lightweight binoculars are best. Do I need pair with a zoom function or not? I have been told that 10 x 25 with no zoom is best as zoom can wobble a bit - is that right. They must be lightweight and not TOO expensive.

Can I just say I ummed and arred!!! about binoculars on Kenya Safari holiday that I went on last year, and in the end I did'nt take them. You must do what you think is best, but I would just invest in a good digital camera with good zoom etc... as you have to keep standing up and sitting down in the jeeps to see out, and if there are 6-8 of you thats not easy so if you have the binoculars on by the time you have sorted that all out you will off missed the photo oppertunity. I think where they might come in handy is by the pool late evening you could scan the havana with them and see things maybe I couldnt. I did even look at binoculars that have a built in camera so what you look at you can take pictures off. In then end I got some great shots with camera, and when your out and about the elephants giraffes etc are very close.

Hope you have a great holiday. I know I did.

Hi Jan,

I took binoculars woith me when I went and to be honest they were the best thing I did take, I have a good camera and took some excellent pictures, but the binoculars gave you that edge when scanning the horizen, while watching elephants at a water hole, I looked beyond them to see vultures and a hyena feeding on a dead zebra, something those with cameras couldn't see (unless they had terrific zoom), so my advice would be yes take some binoculars with you, I paid about £100 for mine off ebay, but they are available from camera shops, they are Nikon Action 10-22x50 CF (wouldn't call them lightweight, but not too heavy).

Have a great trip, its fantastic.
