Hi Deborah I have just booked a holiday for Lake Como going on 2nd May 2011. I have been previously and enjoyed the ferries on the lake. You can buy saver tickets to travel around the middle lake to Menagio, Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo and Lenno. The views from the lake are absolutely stunning and by far the best way, I think, to see the scenery and the villas. The gardens of the Villas Carlotta in Tremezzo and Balbianello in Lenno are a must as are the included gardens of the Villa Meltzi in Bellagio and the two on the day trip to Lake Maggiore. The monastero garden in Varenna has spectacular views and is also worth a visit. You must try the pizza on the move from one of the little take aways -there was a really good on in Bellagio up one of the steep alleys and of course it is compulsary to have an ice cream every day!!
