I've just come back from a lovely holiday cruising on the River Duoro in northern Portugal.   We were a very good group of 17 plus our hardworking TM, Kristina, and the weather was lovely (25-29 degrees!).  There was one problem, however, during the week - two of the group had health problems which necessitated them both going to the area hospital at the same time.   One had fallen and hurt her wrist so there was a suspicion that she might have broken it and the other had a heart scare.   Kristina brought them back later that evening, which is when they told us their stories.

One had a check-up, her wrist xrayed and was given a supporting bandage as it turned out not to be broken but badly sprained;  the other had a wide range of tests and saw a cardiologist, leaving with the reassurance that the problem wasn't quite as severe as everyone had thought and with some medication and preventative advice.   The difference between the two patients was that one had an up-to-date EHIC, the other hadn't bothered to renew hers because with Brexit she apparently didn't think it was worth it.   Result:  the sprained wrist cost its owner about 200 euros to cover her hospital visit and bandage while the heart patient only had to pay a few euros for the medication, all her tests being covered by her EHIC.

The moral of this story is therefore:  if you are going on holiday in Europe, please make sure you have an up-to-date EHIC and take it with you (besides the one who didn't have one at all, another in the group had one but had left it at home - fortunately, although not in good health, he didn't need medical attention).   Yes, it may cost you (it is free to obtain or renew if you use the official site) but that is insignificant when compared with what the medical fees without one can be and will save a lot of stress for everyone involved.

A timely reminder Ann.

I returned from two holidays and discovered that my EHIC was out of date.  It had expired in April!  The online renewal, which was very easy to do, came through less than a week.

Good advice Ann. And, remember to carry your card with at all times. I've been on holidays when someone has been taken to hospital after aaccident while out and about, and been required to pay for treatment because their card was locked in the hotel safe wiit their passport.

Many thanks for the reminder... just checked mine and it expired in May 2016!!  :s

Just applied for another one - goodness only knows when I would have checked if I hadn't seen your post!

Thank you for posting a reminder, Ann.

I have been on at least one holiday with an out of date card but luckily didn't need it. I'm glad you enjoyed the cruise as it is one of the holidays at the top of my list for next year.

Huge thanks, Ann.  Almost out date, but had not given it a thought. All formalities completed,  waiting for it to arrive in plenty of time thanks to you.  Many more happy hold. N

Well done Ann. I keep mine with my passport, so check the expiry date whenever I am travelling. I renewed mine earlier in the year, so I'm sorted for the next five years!

Well, unless you have an Irish passport or something, you are likely to find the EHIC no longer valid after March 2019.

Not necessarily Marje, the EHIC card covers the European Economic Area (EAA) and Switzerland, not the EU.

Thanks JohnL. Who knows what will happen!

Checked and checked- my EHIC is up to date, just as well as off to Vienna on Friday.

I have booked the River Douro for next July. Very confusing on Saturday as it would not let me get past trying to pay for it. It seems that the cruise boats are changing from Vasco da Gama in brochure to MS Gil Eades on Saturday to MS Fernao de Magalhaes. I was rung by a Malina on Monday to tell me that I had to pay an extra £225 for a room upstairs as all the bottom deck are sold :dodgy: She also rang my home phone, not mobile that I had used on Saturday. She then rang back complaining that I had put the phone down before she told me the terms and conditions which I had been told on Saturday 😠

Thank you Amy for clearing up the different cruisers. I have booked the July 26th as my sister was unable to take holiday before and the August is way too hot for me.

No wonder there was confusion on the boats
