Recently returned from lovely holiday in Madeira. Flight from Manchester, good landing (despite Madeiras reputation, but runway certainly improved since I was last there). Lovely hotel, Pestana Casino Park, about a 10 min walk downhill into Funchal, there is a bus goes past should the hill be a challenge in the heat. Hotel high above harbour beneath, fabulous view over harbour and sea from lovely dining room. Rooms clean, tidy, all had balcony, air con, fridge, hairdryer not the best I've ever used and some ladies were trying to buy themselves one in Funchal, so maybe take one if it may be a problem. Some on trip disturbed at night by traffic noise, also people leaving casino, and had rooms changed, perhaps ear plugs? All food excellent, well presented, good choices, all meals buffet style. No kettle in room, could be hired from reception. Indoor/outdoor pool with bar and light refreshments. Supermarket on side street next door useful. Trips out lovely, some included. One full day included trip with three course lunch and wine! Other full day trip, not included also had three course lunch! Nice walk along sea front to cable car up to Monte. Included day in Funchal, on and off bus to see sights including interesting market, Madeira wine tasting, botanical gardens and supposed embroidery factory that really was just a shop. If you really want to learn about the embroidery go to Bordal, they have a shop near the hotel and historic factory and shop in town where you see the processes. They also have an embroidery workshop on Thursday mornings where you spend time with their staff learning and trying your hand at the embroidery for 25 euros with your work to take home with you.
