The US dollar is the main currency used in Cambodia. Prices in hotels, shops and restaurants are quoted in US dollars. Cambodian Riels are used only as small change at a rate of around 4000 Riels/US$1

ATMs are available in Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville and Siem Reap and in some other major towns. Take care when withdrawing cash and be aware of your surroundings.

Not all ATMs and banks accept foreign debit and credit cards. Check with your bank before you travel. Credit cards aren’t widely accepted, but some hotels and businesses in larger cities will accept them.Travellers cheques can be exchanged at some banks and bureaux de change.

 Dollars are widely accepted in Cambodia and Laos even in the markets and for tuc-tucs. You will get change in dollars and/or local currency depending on how much the change is.  Credit cards were accepted in all the hotels we stayed in and nearly all the shopping opportunities.  Both currencies are closed so you cannot bring any out with you and we were advised to only change a small amount in the hotel.  Make sure you get small denominations as everywhere is really inexpensive.

I did this trip in November and as Vickie says then in Cambodia (& Laos) the US$ rules.

I took cash, as I think did most on the trip, so did not use ATM's.

If you are paying for something you frequently get local currency in your change but don't worry as on your next transaction the seller etc will usually take your local money and then make up any difference in US$.

It is a great trip.

However, if you are doing the Hanoi add on then the dong rules but you could change money in the hotel & there were plenty of money changing places in Hanoi itself.
