I would check with your card provider on this subject. They will be able to let you know their exchange rates and charges etc.

I did this trip in March and only took £50 in Yuan and the rest in Sterling - on the advice of Daniel Adams.

The Reception at the hotels will exchange money for you. The rate is the same everywhere - but better in China than the UK apparently. I also took my credit & debit cards just in case I wanted to make any bigger purchases.

Thank you very much for the information. I hadn't thought about taking cash in sterling but I could take some and like you say use the card for larger expenditure. Trust a lovely lady to put me right.

The advice from previous visitors and on the information sheet says that they will not accept any notes that are not in imaculate condition

Not sure if this will be any help or not, I did this trip in 2005 (before the olympics), I was told that I couldn't take any chinese money into the country (perhaps things have changed) and was advised to take US$. I took the equivalent of £500 cash in US$ and also £1000 in US$ on one of those american express pre paid cards (wouldn't advise this as it was difficult to unload it when I came back), others I went with took US$ travellers cheques, none of us had any problems changing it into Yuan when there, I had a great time and didn't even use the pre paid card.
