Yes. Contenious subject I know!

Hi Olly. I know all the general no smoking areas, like in airports, coaches etc, but I wondered if there is a " rule of thumb" now in Italy, as there is in the U.K for where you can and can't smoke? I.E, hotel rooms, bars etc? I hasten to add that I DO NOT, and never have smoked in restaurants, and anywhere where food is present, and respect other people's views on the subject. If they don't like smoking then I just move away. However it would be nice to have the odd cigarette on my balconey if I have one and if that is allowed. Also in the lounge of the hotel.

Have you ever been asked this question?

Hello

This is the first time this question has been asked!

Italy introduced a ban on smoking in all enclosed public spaces (eg bars and restaurants) in 2005 and most visitors report that the ban has been successfully enforced. As in the UK, diners and drinkers have become used to going outdoors for a cigarette.

However, if the tables and chairs are outdoors then smoking is usually permitted although, as you say, it would be a good idea to check with the group before doing so, out of courtesy.

Italian hotels are allowed to set aside bedrooms for smokers, so you may be able to get one of these, where possible. If you mention it to our holiday advisors, they can make a note on your booking. If you have a room with a balcony, you should be fine smoking out there.

Kind regards,

Thanks Olly. I haven't stayed in a hotel in Italy in ages as usually I travel over there to stay with a friend in Milan or her family on the Italian Riviera, so I wanted to be absolutely sure. I also like to be totally courteous when smoking outside so that is no problem.

I need to contact one of the advisors this week anyway, so I mention this to them when I ring re the possibility of having a bedroom for a smoker if my room does not have a balcony.

Thanks again.

Hi Pat

The best thing to do is give our holiday advisors a call on 0844 567 8844 (with your booking reference handy). Let them know that you would like to request a non-smoking room and they will add the request to your booking. If possible, we will meet your request but we can't guarantee it.

Kind regards,
