Thanks Sylvia for your reassurance. I know I am going to enjoy this trip and am not going to worry about 'windy' roads. The timings of the trips are not too long which is good. I am really looking forward to Calabria and am already counting the days.

Jaya

I really wanted to go to Lake Bled at the same time as you, but I have decided to go in October to see the Autumn colours. Be nice to meet up again one day

Hi Ann

Oh dear! I do not think I am very good with winding roads. I have already booked the Calabria trip and will just have to hope for the best. Despite almost being cured of travel sickness, windy roads do make be a bit queasy at times. I will just have to be prepared!

Hi Jaya,

It must be me, but I never noticed that the roads were "windy". But being on the west coast of Scotland they are never straight for more than half a mile! Try sitting in the middle of the coach so that it is not too obvious where you are going, and you will very likely be OK. The trips to Belvedere and Diamonte took about 3/4 hr at most, none of the others apart from the Sila mountains took very long, possibly hour or so. The streets in the towns are narrow but at that stage there are the shops and houses to look at, and you are going slow anyway.

The scenery is stunning, you'll forget the road.

Hope you enjoy it.

Sylvia

Thanks Diane, I will never go on any kind of boat again, just standing in the water makes me feel sick, I can't even watch waves on television. I have also been up Mount Etna and couldn't understand why I felt so bad until I quickly got down and realised what it was. Thanks for your advice and it's interesting how many of us do suffer with this problem. Unfortunately it does stop me from doing some of the trips as they are either very long or on a minibus.

Take care and may be we will meet on a JY trip one day.

Best wishes xxx

Hi Gail

Don't let travelsickness put you off doing any trips.Although I am usually OK on a coach I have always suffered with motion sickness.

I have always been very seasick and I was extremely ill when I was on a horse being led on a leading rein by a Masai guide when I was on a Kenyan safari. Last year when I went on an elephant safari I was that worried about being sick on the elephant that I took travel pills--I was absolutely fine.

However, when I went on my one and only cruise which was to Alaska I felt grim within a few hours of sailing on calm water. Travel pills didn't work--so rather than be ill all holiday I paid about £30 for an injection off the Ship's doctor and it lasted all week.. Ace!! My health was then probably better than most other passengers on the ship.

So my advice is if you can get a jab/injection if you know or think you are likely to be ill go for it.

By the way I am a frequent JY and Travelsphere traveller.. Was scared silly when I did my first holiday, like many others.

I invariably read the threads on the community, but had never registered to send e-mails but after your comments I was spurred on to reply because of all my problems with motion sickness.

Kind regards

Diane

I have done 3 hours of that journey getting down as far as Cilento (did that in a mini bus last year) and I can remember it being mostly motorway to be honest.

Good luck folks and I DO sympathiese!!

Hello Gail,

Sorry to hear you are not going to do your top choice holiday but am sure you'll have a great time whatever you decide to do.

Mick

Hi Ann

Hello, Gail

I'm sorry to hear about your travel sickness. It does make me wonder, though, if Calabria is really the place for you.

I have just been watching "Italy Unpacked" on BBC2 with Andrew Graham Dixon and Gino ... (his name escapes me and I don't want to go downstairs and check it in the Radio Times), which featured the stretch from Naples down to Calabria. It was fascinating - the history and the food of the region - but it did bring home the fact that the roads are VERY winding and clinging to the sides of the mountains. I went to the Amalfi Coast 3 years ago (with another company) and, even though I do not normally suffer with travel sickness, I found the bus journeys almost too much at times (even with travel sickness tablets on hand).

I have the itinerary for this holiday as I have already booked it but don't know exactly what bus/coach travel is involved (apart from the journey from Naples airport to the hotel) while one is down there. Maybe Sylvia (sjm 533) could give you some advice on this but it does concern me that, even if you managed to get there somehow, would you really be able to get the best out of the holiday or be stuck at the hotel all the time because you were unable to cope with the day-to-day travelling? You might, on reflection, find that another holiday with less bus/coach travel and on less twisting roads would suit you better.
