Dubai - how much spending money to take?
Post: #1
Hello

I am on the March Dubai holiday and just wondering if there is any advice as to how much cash to take?  I understand from another posting we can pay for the Desert BBQ excursion in Pounds Sterling, but I don't have any idea how much local currency to bring out.  Just a figure to cover any excluded meals & drinks plus reasonable souvenirs - I don't intend buying a carpet! Wink

Hello Rosalind,

I am on this tour too and hope that someone will help us out and give a guidance on the amount of local currency to take.

I understand that personal spending is varied but any pointers would be appreciated.

I look forward to meeting you in a couple of weeks.

Hi both

I did this trip in February and have posted a review.  Food and drink in Dubai is expensive - I took £400 and spent another £200 on credit cards.  This included paying for the desert BBQ which you can pay for in sterling, dollars or local currency - I didn't do the Abu Dhabi trip.  Dollars are not generally accepted even in hotels but cards are.  Alcohol is very expensive and generally only available in hotels - you are looking at £8 for a beer and £40-£60 for a bottle of wine.  Very few restaurants outside hotels serve it but the mocktails are delicious.

If you are staying at the Marriott, the sports bar on the ground floor has an extended happy hour when drinks are half price.  Taxi's are reasonable if you use the government ones which are red and cream and the Marriott runs a free shuttle bus to the Dubai Mall on a first come first served basis.

Hope this helps and you have as good a time as I did.  It is a fascinating city.

Best wishes

Thank you for your response Jonah, I now think I will take more than I was planning to! I did read your review the other day too, and that was helpful.
