Hi all you lucky people going on this wonderful trip!

I did this trip last November, my first solo holiday and it was amazing

Regarding the  photo for Laos, I got mine done in the booth in Asda and just trimmed it to fit the space on the form. Hope that helps!

Thanks Mo. Any hints or tips and clothing advice? Sandra

Hi Sandra

Visa in Laos is simple, stand in the queue just hand your form and photo in and that's it, I cant remember if you needed 2 photos or if I just took 2 just in case!

As far as clothing goes just common sense really, it was really hot in Cambodia and Laos so just loose casual summer clothes, some ladies wore vest tops and shorts which was ok, I wore cropped trews, shorts and t shirts most of the time, flip flop and trainers, bit smarter for dinner but still casual, always cover up at temples, I wore loose trews and shirts, others covered up with shawls. We got a shock in Vietnam at the change so make sure you take a warm top, hopefully you will be luckier with the weather there. I would recommend doing your prezzy buying before Vietnam as you will notice the price difference, the markets in Cambodia and Laos are really good for bargain hunting. Ask your guide in Vietnam to take you to the café were they make the proper egg coffee with the little candle under the cup, absolutely delicious!, we had one at another café and it was awful. I took dollars with me then any loose change I had in reil or dong I put towards the guides and drivers tips, make sure you budget for tips - they do add up.

Sockets were all 3 pin apart from 1 hotel but I cant remember which one it was. I also took a travel iron with me which came in very handy after doing hand washing, clothes dried quick on backs of chairs on balconies. There is a laundry place in Laos were they will collect your clothes and drop them off again.

I took malaria tablets and used highest strength Deet, I didn't get bitten once apart from standing in ants nests - twice!.

A lot of us got the dreaded tummy bug, take imodium and rehydration sachets with you.

Above all just have a fantastic time!

That's great Mo. Really useful info. I have heard that everyone gets tummy bugs - not looking forward to that bit!

Do we need to take mess or is the risk small on our trip?

Thanks

Hi Sue

I have just read your post about not recognizing anyone when you meet at a hotel the night before departure.

OK, this could be classed as silly, or you could look silly doing it. If you are not wearing a red rose lol, why not have a JY luggage label in your hand swinging it about (or not)  so Jyers will recognize you.

Have a super holiday.

Kind Regards

Di

Hi Di

Had the bright idea last year that by some psychic ability I would be able to pick out the solo traveller heading for Borneo?. So .... I approached several people... All of whom were not that person?. Found out the next day that she had stayed in her room for the evening!

Hi Vickie

I've got my visa for Cambodia and I've got the form and photo for the Laos visa ... Please could you remind me how much the Lao visa is and what currency to pay in?

Many thanks

Sue

Hi Sue, not long now- getting very excited!

I have also got my visa for Cambodia, did the online e-visa. Where did you get the form for the Laos visa? I've looked but can't seem to find anything. I'd like to get as much prepared before hand, otherwise I know I'll panic.

Thanks

Paula

Hi Paula

Sorry I missed your question about the Laos visa.... I got the form from JY. Someone else has pointed out that the photo they require is smaller than the usual passport size. I've only got standard passport size and hope that it will do or can be trimmed.... Does anyone know how important this is please?

It's always the little things that bother me!

Also... I'm booked into premier inn T4 on 5 Nov. It would be nice to try to meet others there although I planned to do that last year and we didn't recognise one another so that didn't work ?

Sue

Hi Sue

Thanks for the update. I managed to get a copy of the form from the embassy, but I'll be getting my visa on arrival, I only have standard passport size photos aswell so fingers crossed it'll be fine. It doesn't seem to say anything on the paperwork about specific sizes.

I'll be getting a lift to Heathrow on the morning, but hoping to meet people at the check in desk- I know I'll panic if I go through to the lounge on my own.

Paula

Hi Paula

When I travelled from T4 last year we had a voucher to use the Skylounge. It was a great place to meet as I found my fellow travellers there and a couple of people even cracked open the  prosecco! Vickie do you know if we have that facility again? (Lounge not prosecco!)

Thanks Sue

Hi Sue

I used a standard passport photo and just trimmed it slightly.  According to some notes I found by Googling you are allowed some leeway.

If you are at the new Premier at T4 and not Bath Road so am I.  More than happy to meet you at a pre-arranged spot and time.

Regards

Hi Jonah

Photo trimmed to size ?. Yes I'm at T4 premier inn ... It'd be nice to meet ... I'll be having a glass of wine and dinner there so could meet for that? Anyone else from the group who could join us ?

Hi Sue,

We've requested seats for you 🙂

In terms of malaria medication, we recommend that you speak to your GP so they can provide the best advice for you.

Thanks,

Vickie

I asked at the doctors and showed the doctors travel clinic the list of places we were going to and they said no malaria tablets required. I've had all the jab they suggested though. Cost an arm and a leg for the ones not on the NHS (rabies, hep B etc) but most last for 25 years.

Hi Vickie

I have received my final travel info today so getting very real now. Picking up on some earlier posts about luggage labels , may I please request that two are sent and can you confirm that the voucher for the Sky lounge will also come with the travel wallet.

Many thanks - getting very excited.

I’ve been told the same re malaria but I’ll use strong Deet to avoid bites as Dengue fever is found in the region.

Received the final travel documents this morning - three weeks to go, it's getting very real now!!

A little bit confused though - On the Day to Day Itinerary it says, Day 14 Luang Prabang to Hanoi - After breakfast you'll transfer to the airport and fly to Hanoi, where you'll stay for the next three nights............but on the Travel Itinerary the flight from Luang Prabang to Hanoi isn't till 19:15 ?????

Does this mean we're waiting at the airport all day??
