I subscribe to Nat Geo Traveller and the September 2018 issue arrived today. Short article, mostly pics, on Laos (P122) to whet appetites.

Hi Vickie

I've got my visa for Cambodia and I've got the form and photo for the Laos visa ... Please could you remind me how much the Lao visa is and what currency to pay in?

Many thanks

Sue

Hi, has anyone got any advice about the best way to organise currency on this three country based holiday. I’ve been told that currency for Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, cannot be ordered before hand  and all local currencies must be spent within the country as it cannot be exchanged once you get home. I’ve been advised to get a pre loaded travel card in Sterling,  which can they be exchanged into local currencies in the different currencies. Dollars also see to be welcome ??? Any advice please.

Hi Ammurray

I am taking dollars as all these countries accept dollars for most of the expenditure such as meals.  Local currency will be needed for things like coffees and markets.  This can be obtained on arrival and I often find the TM arranges this for you or you will be able to get it at the arrival airport.  The Lao visa has to be paid for in dollars.  If you are taking dollars as currency make sure they are as new as possible and unmarked otherwise they may be rejected.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jonah - that really helps me too. I was unsure whether just to take USD, but I think I will stick to USD now.

Anyone checked what the weather is likely to be like and does it vary greatly between countries and areas?

Hi Sue, not long now- getting very excited!

I have also got my visa for Cambodia, did the online e-visa. Where did you get the form for the Laos visa? I've looked but can't seem to find anything. I'd like to get as much prepared before hand, otherwise I know I'll panic.

Thanks

Paula

Hi all,

Not long to go now! i booked this almost a year ago to the day!

Having been to both Cambodia & Vietnam before hopefully I can answer a few queries. There is another thread somewhere & I might have said this already either back in this thread or elsewhere.

Laos visa: Following discussions about visas on the forum I decided to use the JY service for Cambodia having signed up for this at trhe time of booking. At the 10 week to go point I got the visa pack, by e-mail, from JY, which included the paperwork for Cambodia & Laos. If you did not sign up for the JY service perhaps you did not gert this but I am sure JY can send you one if you ask. The thing I noted was that the photo they ask for is somewhat smaller than the usual passport sized picture. I got mine done to the right size in my local photo store where their machine can size to pretty much any size you want.

Weather: They say there are 3 seasons. Hot, very hot & very hot and wet! I was there in February 2010 and it was much warmer than the UK. Shorts & a tee in Cambodia but slightly cooler up north with perhaps a light jacket or fleece.

Money: I keep a travelogue but this does not go into vast detail about what everything cost! Having a quick re-read then in Hanoi at a chain recommended by the TM (who was on another table!) a shrimp and rice dinner and a coke got me change fron $6.00. and in Seam Reap i got lunch & a drink in a cafe for $4.00. Obviously prices will have gone up but overall the cost of living is much cheaper. All my notes about spending are in US$ which is what I shall be taking.

Hi Paula

I emailed the Laos embassy in London yesterday and they sent me the visa form today along with instructions as to what they required. Really straightforward form too.

Hi SandraV

That is spooky because I e-mailed the embassy too yesterday and got the form back in a couple of hours.  Looks really straightforward and will save queuing.  Slightly more expensive at £35 plus postage but at east it will be in my passport for posterity 😃

I can't post mine to the embassy as I have a small trip before Cambodia and need to have my passport. I also am unable to get time off work to visit the embassy. I really just wanted to have the form so that I could save time at Laos airport by having it completed in advance.

All the information from JY when I booked said Laos visa on arrival. As I will need my passport in  December and early January, it won’t be possible to send it away in the post. Please confirm that for the February 5 2019 departure it will still be possible get a visa on arrival. The Cambodian one isn’t a problem as I can apply on line.

I am not going to be able to send my passport off either, so was planning on doing the same thing and have the form filled out ready.
