I’ve seen recommendations on here for packing cubes which, I have to say I hadn’t heard of before.

Wish I had, would have been very useful on other trips with one or two night stop itineraries!

Can I ask those of you who bought them for recommendations ?

Looking on Amazon there seem to be quite an array, of various numbers of boxes.

Presumably, if you buy a larger number it gives you more freedom to optimise to suit your individual suitcase?  Or am I over complicating things !

I hadn't heard of them before, Graham, until I saw mention of them on the Forum. I agree that they are very useful, especially when touring around.

I bought mine from Amazon and went for a pack of small ones (fine for keeping things like chargers, adapters, socks etc); then the next size up, 3 or 4 of which will fit across my suitcase and take undies, t-shirts etc; and finally, the next size up from there, 2 of which will fit side by side on the top and take sweaters. I have to admit that I rarely use the biggest ones, preferring to put the bulkiest stuff in the lid of my suitcase, but the others are always useful. I pack them neatly when going on holiday, keep them on the wardrobe shelves of my room (or in the suitcase if moving on each night) and use one of them to hold the dirty laundry on the way home. I haven't yet done it but it would be possible to use one to keep all the stuff together for the following day to save having to unpack the whole suitcase if touring and arriving somewhere fairly late in the evening.

My suitcase is black so I bought turquoise cubes, that way I can see them easily in the gloom of the interior. As they come in several colours, too, you can just go for whichever makes you feel most cheerful when tackling the packing/unpacking/packing.

So yes, I would recommend packing cubes - if you get them, enjoy the holiday that goes with them.

Hi Graham,

Packing cubes are a brilliant idea; just perfect for touring holidays when you’re living out of a suitcase. I bought a pack of 3 a few years ago, and after reading several reviews on Amazon I chose eBags. They aren’t the cheapest on the market but they’re well made (the mesh is quite strong) and the zips are substantial. Again, after reading reviews I understand that the zips have a tendency to break on some of the cheaper options, but no such problems with eBags.

You will find that they come in a variety of sizes and colours, together with the option to purchase packs of 3 - in different sizes or a trio of the same size if you wish. Just select what you think will suit you best.

I use mine to store short and long sleeve shirts, t-shirts and jumpers as I prefer to fold my trousers with tissue paper in between, and even the largest size bag isn’t big enough to hold trousers folded in half - you’d have to roll them up to fit inside.. But I have to say that, like all the best ideas, packing cubes are brilliantly simple.

Hope this helps

Mike

Cubes are a bit like Marmite - you love them or hate them.

Some swear by them for clothing but I've never really got on with them in this context.

However I tend to use travel clothing which is easily washable overnight. If you pack stuff loose such as travel wash and a sink plug you can almost guarantee they will work themselves to opposite ends of the case! So I find cubes invaluable for packing small things together so they stay together. One for room things such as travel wash, adaptors etc, another for medical stuff such as asprins and plasters etc etc. And so on as needed and in different colours it is easy to find stuff when you want it. The larger ones are, as mentioned, are however very useful for dirty laundry.

I second everything that has been said. I don’t personally tend to use the very small bags much. I have medium size that just take folded shirts, and tshirts. Three will fit snugly across my case. Not being very tall, folded pairs of my trousers fit nicely into a large cube. I think it’s a case of working out what suits you best. I have recently bought one of the suitcases that zip around the middle. Wasn’t sure at first, but after one trip I am hooked. So easy to have shoes toiletries and underwear in one half, leaving a flat base in the other for folded items in my cubes. Also, I have started using zip sandwich bags for under wear and shoes. It’s so easy to see contents at a glance. Happy packing!

What I should also have said, Graham, is that before you buy any I would suggest measuring your suitcase to give you an idea of how many cubes would fit across to get the maximum use. And I agree with Mike, I bought the eBag ones before my first trip to Canada 5 years ago, have used them twice a year since then and they are still going strong.

Hi

I bought two packs of Caribee packing cubes some years ago and they are still in perfect condition. I have used them on many holidays and find them really useful. Found two websites selling cubes at a reduced price. Just type Caribee into search engine and details will come up.

Hope this helps

I have 2 small, 2 medium and 2 large cubes.I use a small one for non-prescription medication, plug adaptors and cables.  If need be i use the other one for sun screen, midge deterent, hand gel, etc.  Bought from Amazon, mid-price, and have lasted well for 7 years now and still going strong.

I bought cheap ones from Amazon but have to say they have done the job perfectly well.  I roll my clothes and filled the cubes fairly full - the zips didn't break and my clothes were relatively crease free, especially after a quick hang in the wardrobe.  They are useful if touring and staying in different hotels as you can see what you need without rummaging through your suitcase.  You can be extra organised if you want and put shirts/t shirts in one, trousers in another, etc.  I found them wonderful and was able to pack much more.

Hi,

I have been using packing cubes for many years now! Amazon ones are fine, but if you really want good quality I'd recommend Eagle Creek. I've got them in various sizes, the medium ones being the most used, for t-shirts, underwear etc., and the large one for trousers etc. The smaller one I use for chargers, connectors etc.

Enjoy!

Cheers,

Hils

Packing cubes are wonderful. I have been using them for years. On touring holidays I also plan what to wear each day and this way I do not have to take all the packing cubes out - of course, there are times when I change my mind! Reading the post about a suitcase which zips in the middle has made me to look out for one as I have not seen them. I will need a new suitcase soon as mine always gets battered the first time I use them no matter which brand I buy.

Packing Cubes bags are brilliant. They are so good when your only staying in hotels maybe one or two nights, They especially came into their own on one particular occasion. I was on the India trip and our luggage had to be out of our room the evening before we went to bed. We had an early morning train journey. I am very careful with making sure any important medication is always with me, but at 4am I suddenly needed Imodium..!, .say no more. As I was fine before going to bed. Guess what I'd packed it away. So I had to get out tour guide out of bed. She then had to retrieve my case from storage. She arrived with my case, on opening it there was all my lovely packing cubes neatly placed in my case with a small one especially filled with all my medical bits including Imodium, right to hand. If I hadn't used cubes I would have had to root through clothes etc with I really wasn't in the state to do anyway. They are fantastic for traveling especially if your not staying in one place for more than a couple of nights.

There is a huge array and choice but all are a similar size. TBH they are reasonably cheap and do the same thing. I like the ones with a cotton base, mesh sides to let the air in and plastic see through top. I do a lot of tours with lots of hotels and they make life so much easier. I bought 2 sets of three and use them as needed. I wouldn't be without them

I mentioned these to my daughter and she bought me a pack of three different sizes for my birthday, I have never used them before and don't know anyone who has ever heard of them.  Can anyone please advise me, do you roll or fold your items of clothing into these, what is the best way to avoid everything getting screwed-up? I usually lay everything flat in my suitcase but it's a real pain having to delve around looking for something when you are touring, I'm hoping these may solve the problem.

Jaya I bought an Eastpak suitcase some years ago on the recommendation of another traveller.  They are not cheap but if you aren't fussed about colours you can get good deals sometimes on their outlet website.  Their customer service is excellent. I've now used the case on 12 plus tours and apart from being a little dirty the case is as good as ever.  They are very heavy duty canvas so squashy but the wheels/handles are the sturdiest I've seen.  They might not work with packing cubes though as the half and half zip arrangement makes the two halves shallow.  Look on the website they have good pictures as to how they work.  The mid size is perfect for a 20-23kg luggage limit.  Good luck with your search.

To roll or fold in packing cubes is down to personal preference. I normally pack trousers and shirts in layers, but roll tops. Rolling has the advantage of being able to immediately spot the item you need. Also, for small items like leads and medication, I use zippered sandwich bags. Again easy to spot what you need. For toiletries I have started using draw string bags in different colours rather than a rigid one for touring. One for bodyproducts, one for hair products and a third for sun lotions and mossie spray. The drawstrings make it easy to hang the up the bags when bathroom space is limited.

Hello Janec

I was interested to read your recommendation of Eastpak to Jaya, I have recently been looking at these myself.

Not wanting a hard case or four wheel spinner I was shown the Eastpak Tranverz by a Sales Assistant. I wasn't 100% sure thats what I wanted and thought I would read the reviews before I made a decision, most are good, the poor reviews saying they fall over when you stand them on their own. On checking I have since discovered they were a Which? best buy in 2017.  I have looked at these 2 or 3 times now and the more I see them the more I like them.  I opened one up to see if it would take packing cubes (not sure if it was the medium or large size) and it looked as if it could but haven't done any measurements yet to be sure, either way it looks like an Eastpak will be my next purchase, hopefully it will last the rigours of baggage handling better than some of my previous suitcases.
