I was also wondering about the lugguage issue. I'm planning on using my hand luggage as a holdall for the trip to Chengde. I suppose it all depends on much stuff you need to travel with for that particular trip. I'm hoping to travel light but that may all change!

Thanks for your message, you will require an overnight bag for your stay in Chengde as your suitcase will be stored in Beijing then transferred to the airport for your flight to Xian.

I just had a query regarding what luggage to take with me to china. Id planned to take a suitcase and use my backpack as hand luggage to reduce what im taking. However i've read in a few other peoples posts about taking a holdall for the trip to chengde. Is this recommended? What happens to the rest of our luggage when we go to chengde if this is the case?
