That sounds like a better plan than travellers' cheques. You can use pre-loaded cards anywhere that you see the relevant symbol (e.g. Mastercard) but I would advise checking with the card issuer when you buy that you will be able to use it in Thailand.

I am on the Thailand trip in October and have heard that travels cheques can be hard to cash in some parts of the country so would a small amout of cash and a loaded holiday debit card be a better bet?
