Just check your bill before paying as some restaurants in America add the service charge nowadays (so no need to add a tip as well), especially if there are 6 or more people eating together. It does vary from place to place so just be careful you dont tip and pay a service charge, seen a few make that mistake.

With the exception of gratuities to hotel porters (one piece of luggage per person), tips are not included in the price of your holiday and there will be occasions when you are expected to tip.

When calculating the tip in restaurants and bars, 15-20% of the bill is usually appreciated, sometimes the tip is added to the bill and when in taxi cabs, 10% of the posted fare is usually appreciated.

As you will have seen, there has been some recent discussion re tipping.
