Hi Olly

How many people are going on this holiday?

Kind regards

Wendy Johnson

Hi Phil (and others)

I went to Cambodia and Vietnam last year and liked it so much that I am going back to Vietnam on 20th April (the itinerary is slightly less hectic, and we are staying longer in places that I want to revisit).

My Vietnam tips are :-

Money – US Dollars are accepted everywhere that you go. Try to get small denomination US dollars, especially $1 bills. Prices are generally shown in Vietnamese Dong and US dollars. The Dong price is usually slightly lower than the Dollar price (they round-up the Dollar price) but if you buy something priced as $3 (say) with a $5 note you will probably get change in Dong. This way you naturally collect Dong which can be spent during your holiday or used up at the end of your holiday as tips.

Hoi An – this town oozes with silk/material shops which will make bespoke clothes with something like a 24 hour turn-around – guys, yes they do men's shirts etc as well. If this is something that interests you, get yourself measured up there, or bring a favourite top (or whatever) and get it reproduced. Prepare to haggle, but this is a chance to buy something special to remember your holiday by.

Best regards

Joyce

Hi Olly,

Thank you for your reply.I have ordered some US$,I,llprobably buy some more & use dollars only.

Regards Phil.

My daughter has just been to Vietnam, she said cashpoint for your Dong and loads of US dollars. One t-shirt she brought back was 'keep your hand on your Dong!' It was also on the beer holder for her Dad-not sure if he was offended? Hoi An was her happy place-200 dress shops, a very long happy hour and she had her gorgeous leather boots custom made overnight. On my list of places to go.

Hi Phil,

I went to Vietnam in december and didn't have vietnamese money, just american dollars. As Olly says, dollars are accepted virtually everywhere but you can exchange dollars or pounds for Vitenamese Dong when you get there. There are money exchange facilities at the airport and in the cities.

I think the post office can provide Dong if you order in advance.

Have a great time. Vietnam is a lovely country and the people are very friendly.

Regards

Jim

Hi Phil

In my experience the bureaux de change at airports don't sell all currencies so you might be better off trying to buy some Vietnamese Dong in advance online. Other banks or the Post Office may be able to order it for you too.

You may also know that US dollars are widely accepted in Vietnam, so you could just take those and perhaps change some into Dong while you are away. Many travellers say that you could just use US$ for the whole trip. And if you have any dollars left over, they will be easy to use again or change back at any time, whereas Dong might be trickier.

Kind regards,
