Yes, you are right. The new system is called ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) and replaces the old forms you had to fill in on the plane and hand in at passport control. It applies to citizens of countries such as the UK, who don't need a visa to enter the US, and it is valid for two years.

I have just read that you need travel authorisation for travel to the USA from 12 January 2009. As I am going on the Golden West tour in Jan 2009 can you confirm this please?
